Today we’d like to introduce you to James Bunn aka Boutique Paul.
Hi James, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My interest in pursuing music began around 12 years old, with the initial goal of becoming a hip-hop artist. By the time I entered high school, my interested shifted to overall music production and audio engineering. From there I began collecting a variety of gear and instruments while teaching myself the basics of home recording. Post high school I attended Grand Rapids Community College in pursuit of a recording technology degree. I didn’t complete said degree but did learn a lot during my time in the audio engineering classes. After many years of many false starts, I began creating under the alias “Boutique Paul” and have been trying to build a platform with this identity ever since.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It most definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. My main issue was being stuck in the constant cycle of having to work a full-time job, leaving little time to go all-in on my craft. I only recently left my last day job, in September 2021, to pursue my creative work full time.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My primary areas of expertise are music production and audio engineering. I also play keyboard, bass, and guitar at a basic level. I produce, compose, mix, master, and release music as a solo instrumental producer. I also sometimes do short performance video for my social media pages. I released my debut single titled “Winter in Michigan” back in February 2021, with more music planned for release in 2022.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I primarily give credit to my wife Kali, my parents Jim & Lachelle, and my sister Ellinor for always being my biggest support system. They have always been very encouraging, never once doubting what I’m trying to accomplish.
