Meet Jake Baragrey of Northwest Ionia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jake Baragrey.

Hi Jake , it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Years ago I was a master mechanic. As age set in and repairs became more difficult and complicated I sought a change. I essentially took what was the easiest part of my of my job and made a full time thing out of it. I decided to make the most basic part of automotive maintenance that people pay good money for my primary venture. What sets my shop apart from other oil change businesses is that I still maintain the knowledge from years of doing repair and diagnostic work with my customers and regularly share insight on more serious issues that they should have addressed even though I won’t be doing the repair myself and don’t stand to make any money from their problems, just being informative. Additionally as the owner, I do all the worst parts of the work. If something is going to go bad at an oil change facility, it is going to be under the vehicle in the pit 9 out of 10 times. I take this responsibility upon myself. The rest is consistency and building trust over time. I take pride in being the place you can send your daughter or wife or even grandmother to knowing they are in good hands and won’t be taken advantage of.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
One of the largest obstacles I faced was starting a business in an existing building where people have had unpleasant experiences from prior occupants or workers. I’ve been there about 5 years now and still get flipped off occasionally by cars in traffic that I’ve never seen or serviced.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
One thing that does stand out is that I’ve never been somebody’s boss before so I’m still figuring that out and I pay my guys well above the industry standard.
