Today we’d like to introduce you to Hunter Charneski
Hi Hunter, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My story was self-sabotage. More specifically, the story of a victim. I got taken away from my dad when I was four years old. We were reunited when I was thirteen and he was dead one year later. Oddly, that made sense to me. “I was taken from him as a toddler…he was taken from me as a teenager.”
Because that was the story–the story of a victim–playing in my subconscious all day, everyday, for the next twenty years, I overcompensated by amassing women, drugs, money, status, etc. in order for me to feel worthy, good enough, and lovable.
Then I changed my story, and when I changed my story, I changed my life.
At the age of thirty-two, Jesus Christ intervened in a powerful way. When He did, there was no looking back. I knew the way, the truth, and the life. I had to share my story so others stuck in self-sabotage could know Him…and change their story, too.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
That’s a stupid question, and I mean that technically, not pejoratively; the definition of a story is: a character who wants something and has to overcome conflict to get it. If it’d been a smooth road, i.e. no conflict, there wouldn’t be a story. Not a very good one at least. Consider the following examples:
– If Jason Bourne already knew who he was, “The Bourne Identity” would have sucked.
– If Liam Neeson’s daughter didn’t get kidnapped, the movie “Taken” is a goner.
You see? Stories need struggles. I’ve been broke. I’ve been strung out on club drugs. I’ve been a scoundrel. But all those conflicts were necessary; the more conflicts one has in their life, the better the story. Stories need struggles.
That’s the reason why my book: “The Way: Out of Self-Sabotage; Into Self-Mastery” needs to get into as many hands as possible. Too many people are trapped in the same story I was–the story of a victim–and are none the wiser to the fact that all their struggles and conflicts are just part of one helluva story they can tell…if they’re willing to put down their victimhood. Unfortunately, some won’t. But for those that do, they’re going to have amazing stories to share.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a District Manager, (until writing books becomes my full-time gig) for Empire Hospitality Group in Grand Rapids, Michigan. I oversee eight Subway restaurants.
I would say my specialty is helping people see their self-sabotaging activities. In other words, I make them conscious of it, because the truth of the matter is, most are completely unaware they’re doing it because it’s so familiar to them, they don’t know any better.
I was at a company meeting last week. One of my peers was having a difficult time; she was struggling with imposter syndrome. As I was talking her off the ledge, so to speak, she looked at me, her eyes welling and said: “Your words.”
Whew, that gives me goosebumps reliving that moment in my mind’s eye. What she said to me is what I specialize in, what I’m know for, what I’m most proud of, and what sets me apart from others.
My words. If I’m humble enough to not let their power corrupt me, then they can do a whole lot of good. Anyone who knows me knows I’m incredibly intentional with them, even if it means a simple conversation takes longer than it should. Just ask my wife.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
Email me at [email protected] because as billionaire Mark Cuban once said: “Never say ‘no’ to a conversation.” I’m always open to podcasts as I know finding guests can be stressful. As far as support goes, it’s really simple: buy my book “The Way: Out of Self-Sabotage; Into Self-Mastery” because that book will be the preeminent book on self-sabotage. That’s clinical, not conceited.
