Today we’d like to introduce you to Harry Rughoo.
Hi Harry, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Harry Rughoo is a Mauritian-English 18 year old violist. He studied at the Purcell School for Young Musicians and the Junior Royal college of Music department under the guidance of Sarah-Jane Bradley, where he then went on to continue his studies with Martin Outram at the Royal-Academy of Music with a very generous scholarship.
Harry has given numerous performances at prestigious venues in the UK, such as the Wigmore Hall, Royal Festival Hall, Royal Albert Hall and the Barbican Hall.
Harry was part of the National Youth Orchestra, alongside the London School Symphony Orchestra, and the National Youth String Orchestra as well as gaining invaluable experience leading both the Purcell School Symphony Orchestra and The Junior Royal College symphony orchestra.
Harry has a very large social media presence which he uses to help inform people about classical music and the viola, and break down the divide between the classical music industry and other music genres.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s a very hard industry to get into, there is lots of toxicity and financial struggles. However it is the thing I love above all else so even despite these things it is worth it
Another problem about the Classical music industry is that there is a very large sense of elitism carried out by the people in it, something derived from its origins in the 18th century that for some reason still remains, My goal is to get rid of this and to make classical music accessible for all, and for the people within the industry to recognise that something has to change for classical music to survive.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a classically trained violist who has recently gained a large following on various social media platforms for posting videos of me playing, but also informative videos about the classical music industry and the elitism that still remains which harms it
I also mix fashion into my videos, are I am quite known for my recognisable looks (dyed hair earring) and distinctive clothes.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
post on social media! it has opened lots of door for me
