Today we’d like to introduce you to George Hunt.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Growing up my dad was the church videographer so every Sunday night or any special event at the church I would help him setup directory aspects of the camera. From their the family business in a way started. Both my sister in LA and I camera fantastics. My 2nd oldest didn’t really take to the camera like us. I’ve always loved the camera . I always tell ppl who ask how I got started my first camera was a Fisher price fp2 lol. I say fp2 because the first model of my knowledge was the blue and white Polaroid based one. The newer black model came. With a yellow 18-85 mm lens lol I think that was what was written on it. It also has an attached flash that actually worked. The zoom lens had a focus ring and a wind up ring u had to push back to load the imaginary next frame…O I loved that thing and believe it’s still in my parents garage buried. Throughout the years I did like most kids in the 80s and 90s learned about computers and video games and sports. The days of photography hasn’t left me but became an after thought when my dad stepped back from the church videographer. The love didn’t leave but the technology was so expensive but the Advent of camera phones soon entered and once I got a half decent camera phone I was back in the fray. By then I had received a bachelor degree in computer information sciences and was heavy into cars. Never thought photography could really make me some substance. Until one day working Ford I saw a video of a guy filming product ad videos on his cell phone. U figured if he could do it so could I .. By then I had been through different version of point and shoot cameras but nothing professional. So when I got married my wife and I was blessed with a good amount of wedding money. So I talked it over with her and after our honeymoon I invested in my self. Took $550 of that money and purchase my first DSLR. Nikon 3400. By far a versatile camera and so much advanced than all my Coolpix cameras combined. During my time as a CNC worker I came up with a name for my family if we was to ever make an action movie.. I called on the hunt studios… I am a big fan of the movie the hunt for red October and since my last name was Hunt… I said why not try it … So now that I was in the media business so to speak why not resurrect that name and use the radar instead of the cross hair. Radar is used to find ppl and objects so my studio was going to use everyday Detroiters and make them stars… Currently I am a photographer and filmmaker and almost weekly our staff of models and actors and crew are constantly with every month our studio facility growing in equipment personal and projects. We are still “on the hunt for excellence!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There will always be growing pains but as in a humans maturity the pains become more bearable and lead to a betterment of living conditions. From lack of equipment to lack of locations to lack of personal and even the discouragement of low views the struggle is and has been real… But man from going into a fashion show nervous and unknown to going full of zeal and knowing mostly everyone in the building it has and still is a ride. I remember the first locally broadcasted fashion show I covered I started to freak out a lil because everyone in their looked so professional and my homegirl calm me down and said ” you deserve to be here just as much as everyone else” and that really sold me and sold my confidence to take pictures in front of almost 500 ppl and to go backstage with many local celebrities.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am an independent photographer and cinematic filmmaker. My studio is called on the hunt studios. I partner with various studios in Detroit but my direct partners are Smooth B productions and Toy Machine Productions. On the hunt studios stands out because of the passion and the love of the art of media and excellence. I love to use my own perspective merged with the perspectives of my colleagues so that the media tells a story no matter what it’s. My Detroit lifestyle also brings a different flavor and voice to the screen.
Any big plans?
God is good as I look back and see how far I’ve came from having to do cell phone videos at the star theater to using 6k cameras at a fully functional set change is a definitely constant at on the hunt studios. With the addition of the collective studios as back of our projects. New actors and models joining the cause and the city of Detroit becoming more filmmaker friendly the future is immensely super Nova Bright… The anticipation is so breath taking I have to calm my self from thinking of the possibilities and try to wrangle down to the immediate task at hand
