Meet Gabriel Carter of Detroit

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabriel Carter

Hi Gabriel, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey in music began early— By eight, I was writing songs, getting a grip on the piano, and delving into production and notation software. My interest soon led to playing at church and mentorship. But being only ten, I was unaware of the full caliber and resumes of my mentors- gospel industry veterans Steven Ford, Noel Hall, and PAJAM. They gave me solid footing in craftsmanship, production and songwriting.

When I began my secondary education, I realized that some of the larger collegiate music schools weren’t the best fit for me. As a result, I chose to attend Grand Valley State University, where I created my own major (Art Politics) through the Integrative, Religious, and Intercultural Studies program. Twelve years later, I am excited to announce the publication of my e-book, An Introduction to Art Politics. In addition to music production and touring, I audit art program curricula and advocate for a more diverse and comprehensive range of educational offerings within these programs.

Currently, my production company, Gabriel Michael Music, boasts over 50 projects, several domestic and international tours, 300 string arrangements, and the creation of more than 200 songs. Notable production credits and touring experience include collaborations with Valerie Simpson, Atlantic Starr, Twinkie Clark & Isaiah Templeton (Elevation Worship). I’ve just wrapped my last few projects for other clients as I am pivoting away from music production to more fufilling ventures in media.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My educational journey has been anything but straightforward, filled with detours and frustrations. Some of the schools I attended no longer exist, and there were times when I couldn’t afford to attend the ones where I was accepted. One memorable moment was when I traveled to Chicago for an audition at a prestigious school. I had prepared three pieces, but due to a misspelling in the sheet music, I learned the wrong song for my opener and was rudely asked to leave before I could even audition. My dad, who had taken time off work to drive me five hours to Chicago, stayed supportive despite the situation. Although it was a quiet ride home, it was a turning point that both broke and built me.

Navigating the music industry as a minority presents unique challenges, limitations, and unnecessary obstacles, particularly in predominantly white spaces. I’ve also struggled personally with identity crises and imposter syndrome, especially when I realized that what I thought would be a hobby continually proved to be my destiny. As an introvert, I often feel like I’m not cut out for this industry; I crave a different life and pace that doesn’t always match up with the demands of the job. My passion seems to override that, though.

Finally, there’s the challenge of balancing my church background with my career, where anything outside of that world is seen as a departure. What people might not know is that –no exaggeration– I’ve turned down millions because of my convictions, and I’ve been rejected because of them too.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a songwriter, international producer, session and touring musician, vocalist, arranger, orchestrator, librettist, show programmer, art program consultant, and now, author.

My production company focuses on musical storytelling. I specialize in the art of illumination—knowing exactly what to highlight to bring a story to life in the most captivating and enduring way. I offer three key services:

1. I help people tell their stories, guiding them from a simple voice note to a fully produced track on streaming platforms.
2. I enhance existing stories by adding elements like strings, percussion, or mixing, whether for touring opportunities or studio projects.
3. I assist in developing stories, from shaping brand identity to strengthening an artist’s voice and confidence.

I’ve always been a songwriter and musician, but during the pandemic, my niche for string arrangements gained significant recognition and became my most requested service. This has since become my specialty, and to date, I’ve completed over 300 arrangements.

What I’m most proud of is my ability to work with limited resources and my versatility as both an artist and producer. I often travel to clients, recording in unconventional spaces—churches, cars, hotel rooms, basements, dining rooms, and even coat closets. Making creatives feel comfortable, understood, and helping bring their most ambitious ideas to life is incredibly rewarding. I’ve also collaborated virtually with clients from other countries, many of whom I’ve never met in person. While defining the finish line can sometimes be challenging, I like to ask what my clients don’t want and work by process of elimination. This approach allows me to blend clarity with exploration, creating results that feel both natural and polished.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success is maintaining and leveraging your natural bend in life.
