Meet Fernando Romero of Spanish lessons with Fernando

Today we’d like to introduce you to Fernando Romero.

Hi Fernando, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My Story: How I Started and How I Got to Where I Am Today

I began my journey in Buenos Aires, where I studied Language and Literature at the Instituto Superior del Profesorado Joaquín V. González. Those early years shaped my love for teaching, languages, and cultural exchange. Wanting to grow both personally and professionally, I moved to Chicago, where I completed my Bachelor’s degree in Hispanic Studies. That move opened the door to a world of diverse educational experiences.

After graduating, I worked in a variety of schools across Chicago, each one offering something unique. I first taught at the Young Women’s Leadership Academy, an all-girls public high school on the South Side. From there, I joined Acero Brighton Park, where I served as the bilingual teacher for 2nd and 3rd grade students—helping young learners strengthen their English while honoring their home language.

Later, I transitioned to GEMS World Academy in downtown Chicago, an IB school where I taught Spanish to students from 1st through 5th grade. During that time, I had the opportunity to design and implement a full Spanish curriculum aligned with the International Baccalaureate framework. That experience strengthened my passion for creating meaningful, culturally rich learning experiences.

Alongside my school roles, I continued tutoring Spanish privately—a side job I’d started back in 2011. Over time, tutoring became more than a side job; it became my calling. Today, I teach Spanish full time, both online and in person, and I work with students from all over the world.

For the last three years, I’ve also worked with Northwest Ed’s Migrant Education Summer Program in Traverse City, Michigan. That program not only allowed me to teach elementary students during the summer—it also opened the door for me to pursue my teaching license in the United States. I completed my K–6 teaching certification at Grand Valley State University, a milestone that deepened my commitment to education and gave me new tools to support diverse learners.

Beyond the classroom, I’m someone who believes deeply in staying active, joyful, and connected to my roots. I love playing soccer—a passion I’ve carried with me since childhood—and I’ve recently fallen in love with tango, a dance that keeps me close to the cultural heartbeat of Buenos Aires.

Today, after years of teaching across countries, cultures, and age groups, I continue helping students connect with language in meaningful, personal ways. Whether in a classroom, online, or in summer programs, my mission remains the same: to empower students through language, culture, movement, and human connection.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t always been a smooth road. Moving from Buenos Aires to the United States changed my life in many beautiful ways, but it also came with real challenges. Learning English quickly was one of the first obstacles I faced—not just the language itself, but learning how to express myself, advocate for myself, and build confidence in a new linguistic world.

Beyond the language barrier, adapting to a completely new cultural landscape was another layer of complexity. Chicago exposed me to a rich mix of communities—African American, white, Latino, immigrant, multiracial—and each one taught me something different. But navigating these cultural differences while trying to find my own place was not always easy. I often felt like an outsider, especially because I was the only person in my family living outside of Argentina. The distance was hard. There were moments of homesickness, loneliness, and feeling torn between two worlds.

At the same time, these struggles shaped me. Being immersed in diverse communities made me a more empathetic teacher. Learning English under pressure helped me support my own bilingual students with compassion and understanding. And living far from family taught me resilience and independence—qualities that continue to guide me today.

In the end, the challenges were not setbacks; they were the foundation of who I am as an educator and as a person. They gave me strength, perspective, and—above all—the ability to connect with students from all walks of life.

We’ve been impressed with Spanish lessons with Fernando, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business, Spanish Lessons with Fernando, is built on a simple philosophy: Spanish should feel personal, human, and meaningful. I specialize in fully customized lessons for learners of all levels—travelers, expats, professionals, heritage speakers, and anyone who wants to feel more confident communicating in Spanish. What sets me apart is the way I tailor every class to each student’s needs, learning style, and goals. My students consistently tell me that I make Spanish feel accessible, fun, and supportive. Whether we’re laughing through tricky grammar, role-playing real-life situations, or exploring Argentine culture, I create an environment where people feel comfortable, encouraged, and motivated.

I’m known for being patient, knowledgeable, and genuinely invested in my students. Many describe my classes as helpful, serious, and fun at the same time—a balance that keeps them progressing without feeling overwhelmed. I’m also proud that so many students mention feeling “at home” with me, whether we’re meeting on Zoom, at a café in Buenos Aires, or walking through everyday conversations in the city.

Brand-wise, I’m most proud that my business has grown organically through trust, connection, and word of mouth. My lessons are not mass-produced or cookie-cutter—they’re built around real relationships and real learning. I want readers to know that when they study with me, they’re not just taking a class; they’re joining a personalized, culturally rich, and supportive learning experience designed to help them speak confidently and connect deeply with the Spanish-speaking world.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
The best way people can work with me is simply by joining one of my Spanish programs. I offer private lessons, small group classes, conversation sessions, cultural workshops, and customized courses for travelers, expats, and professionals. Whether someone wants to improve their grammar, build confidence with real-life conversation, prepare for travel, or deepen their connection with Latin American culture, I create a personalized plan that meets them where they are.

I’m always open to collaborating—with local businesses, schools, content creators, travel groups, and community organizations. I love partnering on workshops, bilingual events, cultural experiences, and creative projects that bring Spanish to life in meaningful and accessible ways. If someone has an idea, I’m always happy to brainstorm how we can make it happen.

One of the most powerful ways people can support my work is simply by spreading the word. Many of my students come through referrals, and I’m grateful every time someone recommends my classes to a friend, coworker, or family member. Sharing my website, my social media, or a review goes a long way in helping me grow.

And right now, I’m especially looking to connect with more students—both in Buenos Aires and online. Anyone who’s curious about learning Spanish, starting from zero, or improving their fluency is welcome. I offer a warm, personalized, and culturally rich learning experience, and I’m always excited to help new students begin their journey.
