Meet Erika Brodie of Michigan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erika Brodie.

Hi Erika, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been an artist my whole life. I took a pause for 13 years to coach and help my children. My two children have music out with one just graduating in the arts and performance from Wayne State last week. She has music out under Yulia Duzy and Liv V. I did the music videos and production, etc… for the videos and photography, hair, costuming for years for that and collaborated with my children in those musically artistic endeavors.

My oldest played vball at college all four years and graduated on the Deans list in accounting. She’s doing amazing things. My son is so talented as well and can sing anything himself and write, draw, but he’s currently graduated from HVAC schooling and apprenticing at the moment.

I believe that being a mother was my first and best job. Now that they are all grown, after a long enduring of domestic violence, I’ve restarted my life and reinvented myself from rock bottom.

After a 22 year long relationship that ended so violent I was traumatized and left with severe PTSD. I had to mentally heal and crawl out of the home I was in to emerge as the woman I knew I always was and had to suppress.

I’ve gotten my Reiki Master Certification, completely redid all my art styles and shows, and am currently doing massage therapy at Dorsey College.

I created a new collection under my website www.NOTDEADYETARTbyedesignsartstudio.com and even more on my instagram and FB pages. I’ve pulled the strength from the spirit of fire in my soul to not give up or concede to the victim status and instead be the survivor for my children to later draw strength from.

The odds have not been in my favor, but I’ve continued to make lemonade out of lemons and see the glass half full. I love who I’ve become leaving the torment and torture behind that was devouring my essence. I’ve embraced the new chapter and journey. I love me and that’s where I needed to start.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Financially is always the struggle for many artists. The talent is usually outstanding and yet, most cannot afford the value and time you put into the craft.

Then, as I mentioned mixing and losing everything and battling PTSD has been less than an easy path.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m known for many things, photography, dried flower art, farm shiek styled redone furniture, homemade canvas and plaster work. I’ve done various forms of art that help the sensory and nervous system with yarns and canvas. I have created a few staple items for healing in my apathocary line and offer those for sale on my website. I created formulas that specifically help people with severe PTSD and anxiety, aches and pains, inflammation from various autoimmune conditions as well

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Happiness is creating outside in nature and being grounded in it. My favorite thing is creating art under the stars and lights listening to the roads and bullfrogs wind in the leaves and moonlight abundantly glowing. What makes me happy is the same thing that’s always made me happy and that is being my most authentic self and that self loves big and gives freely.
