Today we’d like to introduce you to Erik Steele.
Hi Erik, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve been fascinated with film and video production since I was 15 and received a hand-me-down video camera from my father. I learned how to edit on old VCRs and would show my creations to my middle school and anyone that was willing to watch at the time. I was finally able to make a career in the industry when my friend and roommate at the time got me on a feature film here in Michigan; I have been freelancing ever since, with the help of friends and family, it was decided to open up a workspace where creatives could bring their ideas to life, since we opened in 2014 we have been a space for photoshoots, music videos, interviews, short films, and television shows to name a few.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The hardest part of maintaining an ever-changing space is that it continues to evolve and in doing so, gets quite messy during transitions, we also learned quite early on that fake blood is impossible to clean off walls without bringing out the sander.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
One project that I am incredibly proud of is our yearly Horror Film Roulette competition that I not only helped create but also host each year. The competition is a great outlet for creatives to work on a personal project of their own each year. It is also amazing to meet the ever-growing group of fellow creatives in the metro Detroit area and beyond. It is the one project that people associate with me so far. I believe since working in the film industry, I have probably worked almost every position that exists on a call sheet which helps me prepare for almost anything that comes to film and video production. I try to use all my experiences to enhance my Directing role at our studio.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Despite filming quite a few vaccination videos, I am actually terrified of needles, which made the last few years quite difficult.
