Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Garen Wolff.
Hi Dr. Wolff so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My story consists of multiple chapters—author of the Galstanberry series, founder of OfficialCityPrep, an award-winning non-profit, researcher at the National Institute of Health, and physician. The longest chapter has been my physician training of 15 years. Yes, 15! Those were years of exams, sleepless nights at the hospital, and comforting families. My decision to choose Allergy-Immunology was influenced by a personal experience with an allergic food reaction and one particular patient encounter. It was Mrs. Johnson’s third visit to the emergency department for an asthma exacerbation and her frustration was palpable. “I got all my inhalers,” she explained with an exasperated tone, while feverishly digging through her purse. Indeed, she did—but was using the wrong ones, the wrong times. This was our first meeting, but not my first encounter with this situation. I observed firsthand how the burden of asthma disproportionately affects patients with low health literacy and/or socio-economic barriers to care, resulting in increased emergency room visits, hospitalizations, and deaths. Wolff Allergy and Asthma in Detroit allows me to be the physician I’ve always dreamed of. I can treat patients and reduce health disparities.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has been both bumpy and smooth depending on the point of the journey. The bumps ranged from not achieving a certain exam score in medical school to self-doubt or struggling to intubate a patient in residency. Through persistence, prayer, and family, I always found ways to overcome these bumps.
We’ve been impressed with Wolff Allergy and Asthma in Detroit, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Wolff Allergy and Asthma in Detroit is the premier Allergy-Immunology practice in Midtown, Detroit. I provide high-quality care in a warm and welcoming environment. My goal is to help kids and adults get relief from allergy asthma, sinus, food, and immune system conditions. Wolf Allergy and Asthma in Detroit is proud to provide unique programs: IMMUNEBOOST, boosts the immune system, BREATHE treats environmental/seasonal allergies, and JUMPSTART, the only peanut introduction program for infants and toddlers in the state of Michigan.
What would you say has been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Perseverance is my mantra. It has kept me steadfast through trials and tribulations and humbling in the face of successes. Experiences in the academic and clinical setting have showed me that medicine and perseverance are intertwined. It is this relationship that captivates me. The boundless opportunity to learn coupled with challenges that test intellectual aptitude and character propelled me through 13 years of grueling training to become a board-certified Internal Medicine physician and Allergist-Immunologist subspecialist.
