Today we’d like to introduce you to DJ Killa Squid.
DJ, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
So, I started DJing when I went to a music festival called a3C. I’ve always been involved with music because I made beats in middle school, but this time was different because I knew I couldn’t rap I knew I couldn’t sing, but I wanted to be involved with music and I saw the DJ Vashtie at A3C and I specifically went to that like specific stage to see her spin. It’s kind of crazy because I had took a picture and posted it on IG. I think the caption said I wish I could meet you AND she actually responded back and was like meet me at the gate. At this time, I didn’t have an artist pass. I didn’t even know what I wanted to do with my life besides be involved with music but I wasn’t a DJ. I had no real aspirations besides like being certain about what I wanted to do so I had two friends at the time that had artist pass & one of them gave me let me know put their badge on. So, I went up to the gate and I met her and she was like I recognize you because your bandanna and I was just like fanning out without fanning out. I had told her like I loved her said and like this is so I went up to the gate and I met her and she was like I recognize you because your bandanna and I was just like fanning out without fanning out. I had told her like I love her said and like this is what I want to do and she kind of like encourage me to do it and so when I came home that’s the tray is mine this is like 2019. I think I need is 2019. And I told Stacyé J I wanted to DJ. Mind you at the time Stacey strict Stacey is not going to. Teach you anything without you actually investing into it. She specifically told me I will teach you, but you have to buy a controller so I did ask for Christmas and my stepdad bought it for me and it was entirely too small like your finger did not even fit on the platter small and so I took my money and I went and bought another controller for like an additional $150 and after that, the rest is history my stepdad was already as a DJ so that also helped and that also inspired me as well, his name is spud. He does commercials and he edit movies in the trade. He’s done the dirty D he did he’s done a lot of movies. I did my first party with the help of Stacey J as well, but I really learned in Stacey’s basement at my friend Ahmad’s basement RIP to him and in my home basement and I just found my way and that’s what happened
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It has not always been easy being a DJ, especially being a woman, but I’ve learned how to brand myself and to make myself stand out more than any other DJ, that is doing the same thing as me, or is Lee’s trying to do the same thing as me, I make sure that I outperform and leave everything out on the stage. And I’ll do my best to present opportunities for other people that want to DJ it is hard being a woman. A lot of men tend to not respect us. They tend to try to kind of like bully us or you know just not give us the credit that we deserve, but I can guarantee you that I out work a lot of people, especially men I can guarantee you that the black girl DJs are the future of this entire culture, so I just make sure that I embrace it. I embrace all black women and all women that are doing is not to say that on embrace the men but I’m just saying that I know how hard it is for us to do these things and how hard it is to get paid and how hard it is to just get that respect so I make sure that I do my due diligence of showing at.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
So, I think I was known for the way I dress first, and then I just gradually got into music even though I may beat to middle school I really got serious about stuff when I was around like 2019. But the thing that I’m most proud about is really probably DJing, and just being able to look like myself expressing myself to clothes and shoes, and just fashion as a whole is by far one of my favorite things that I can do as a DJ, I think it shows my personality and people get to see my personality before they speak to me. But my style in my ear is what sets me apart. I feel like we could have the same set but you’re gonna hear my influence more. You’re gonna hear me more because of what I choose to blend with each other you’re gonna see me more because of how bright my colors are how I meshed these brands together or how I meshed these colors together.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I have to give my all-time respect to DJ, Stacyé J DJ LiXxer those were my two people that taught me how to count music how to mix music. They stayed in the basement with me and taught me my stepdad as well because that was the first vinyl that I touched. I would also say Vashti, because her being a DJ, and also her being into fashion was a big part to me. I also grew up watching the movie juice and saw that Dj and competition and also, I was a big odd future fan so seeing taco DJ on those big stages were very inspirational to me.
