Meet Detroit’s Mentalist “Steve, The Amazing” of Detroit

Today we’d like to introduce you to Detroit’s Mentalist “Steve, The Amazing”

Detroit’s Mentalist, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started sometime around the age of 8-10 years old, having traded my brother for a magic book at Christmas.

I always had a sort of “intuition” about guessing things that were about to happen, knowing how someone was feeling, or being able to create the future I wanted, so there was something familiar and comfortable about a magic book.

My interest in magic came and went for a little while, but I got into it more when I switched schools for the first time. I switched to a private school and needed something to break the ice with these very new, and very socially advanced kids that had lived completely different lives to me.

By the end of high school I was performing all the time and had no intention of stopping.

I’ve now travelled the country bending metal with my mind in Houston to literal rocket scientists, performing at celebrity weddings from Detroit to West Virginia, and lecturing to magicians in Las Vegas. I also seem to be Cleveland, Ohio’s favorite Mentalist as I end up out there at least once a season.

Over ten years ago my wife told me to quit my weekly paycheck to put all my efforts into performance Mentalism and strolling Magic and that support has allowed me the space to improve each year since.

I’ve been lucky enough to have a two year residency at Detroit’s MotorCity Casino as well as my own recurring Mind Reader Dinner Show in the beautiful Bavarian-styled town of Frankenmuth, Michigan.

I now have more time to focus on the business side of things and have been digging deep into making myself a stand-out business since the pandemic, promising responses to all messages as urgently as possible, timely appearances to all events, and an “always ready to perform” mentality.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’m a naturally introverted person, though that kind of introversion that performers have, where they’re suddenly the light of the party once they have control.

So AT an event, I’m perfectly capable of going up to complete strangers and taking them on a journey, but once the event is over I’m home in the softest clothes possible and as many outside distractions limited as possible.

That brings with it the challenge of doubt and, if left unchecked, impostor syndrome.

Charging money for something that I love doing was a strange thing for a while as well, until you become your own boss and realize that you’re never NOT working. I can’t just watch a movie, for instance, because I’m thinking of the lighting, the emotions, the sets, the delivery and asking “how I can apply it to my own work to improve it?”

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am Detroit’s Mentalist, “Steve, The Amazing”

I am a stage Mind Reader, strolling Magician, and Fortune Teller ready to perform for events across the country.

I specialize in bending metal seemingly by thought alone, impossibly reading thoughts to the delight of audiences large and small, and delivering it all with heart, humor, and a little story behind the magic.

“From what we’ve seen, Steve’s personal brand of card magic is untouchable by any other performer.”

“People went from laughing to amazed when he started in seconds.”

I’m an author of five books for other performers looking to learn how to read minds theatrically.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is to be your own hype-person and not to be the first (and often only) person to tear yourself down.

You definitely want to look at each event in an authentic way and make sure you’re noticing things that you can improve for the next one, but then you’ve got to just say it was the biggest and best event you’ve ever done and move on.
