Today we’d like to introduce you to Deonte & Devona Johnson.
Hi Deonte & Devona, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My fiancé (at the time, now husband) and I were set to be married March 26, 2016 – everything was paid for, set & ready to go. Unfortunately, while 8 months pregnant, I was traveling back home from working in Ohio back to Michigan and was rear-ended by a lady who fell asleep while we were driving on the Ohio turnpike. This happened 3 weeks before our ceremony, that same day, while I laid in a hospital bed for monitoring the baby after the accident – my husband was fired from his truck driving job because he answered the phone after I called several times to let him know about the accident (they had a zero-phone policy). Ultimately, 2017 – the accident caused me to have back surgery – a 360 multi-level spinal fusion with 2 rods, 6 screws, a cage & spacers in my back. After the back surgery, then husband was taking care of me, being home when needed, etc. – and again, lost his truck driving job due to FMLA issues – this was the end of 2018. This life circumstance is what pushed us into entrepreneurship.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We’ve had our fair share of ups and downs along with the many bumps and bruises in this life of entrepreneurship, but my wife and I, without hesitation, would agree that one of our biggest challenges was and still is recruiting and retaining employees. I believe a lot of entrepreneurs would agree with us when we say that this area of entrepreneurship is not an easy task; it’s even more challenging when your business partner is your spouse, and you both want nothing more than to see your business succeed while at the same time still newlyweds and fulltime parents trying to have a healthy home and work balance.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
We run a successful cleaning, junk removal, and demolition company to where we specialize in Airbnb turn-over cleanings and residential and commercial junk removal and demolition. We’re known for our exceptional customer services and going above and beyond to meet our client’s needs.
We are most proud of the organic and strong business relationships we have built in our 5 years of business with our clients, and our children are able to get a front-row seat to be able to understand how important building relationships are in life and that entrepreneurship is obtainable.
What sets us apart from others, we believe is our drive & commitment – within our marriage, within our family & within our business.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Oh definitely!!! We have been full-time entrepreneurs since January 2019! After the surgery & my husband being fired again, we decided to make our business as our primary source of income. We trusted in God, sought guidance and wisdom thru prayer, and decided to launch into the deep. We never intended to become entrepreneurs, so this wasn’t planned out; we didn’t have a business plan, business model, or anything else. We leaned on our faith every day & still do.
