Today we’d like to introduce you to Deondra Powers.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I learned how to braid when I was about 8 or 9 years old. I taught myself by practicing on my dolls and then I started practicing on close friends and family. I learned how to do other styles, such as extensions, while in high school. My sister-in-law, Shelly, taught me. Styling hair started off as a hobby but then became a side hustle during my undergraduate studies at Eastern Michigan University. I was actually going to stop once I started teaching but my clients wouldn’t let me. So, I quickly learned how to juggle being a mother, student, teacher, and entrepreneur. My success thus far has come from word of mouth and social media.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t always been smooth. I didn’t get serious about hair until college, which was in Ypsilanti. However, I moved back to Detroit after giving birth to my oldest daughter, Leah. Business slowed down at first because most of my clientele lived in Ypsilanti but once I learned how to use hashtags on Instagram, I was pretty much good to go because people could easily find my page.
Another struggle that I faced at the beginning was properly displaying my work. Luckily, my friend, Janae Griggs, gave a few pointers to help increase traffic on my page. She told me that I needed clearer pictures and videos with better lighting for potential clients. I definitely noticed the difference once I made that simple but huge change.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a hairstylist who’s skilled in many areas but I specialize in braids and extensions. I’m also known for my beautiful curls. I’m most proud of my versatile style. I also make hair growth oil and beard oil, and will soon be adding shampoo, conditioner, and personal styling services, as I am in love with fashion!
What sets me aside from others is the fact that I work from home, which prevents my clients from having to wait to be serviced because I don’t overbook, and I give my clients the option to bring their children to their appointment, if needed.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was a very mature and laid-back kid. I loved art, dancing, and playing with my dolls.
