Meet Dennis and Michelle Caskey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dennis and Michelle Caskey.

Dennis and Michelle, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
We’ve always loved traveling together. When we were dating and newly married, we used to go on lots of trips both around Michigan and across the country. Once we started our family, however, we had to slow down on traveling and funnel that time and money into our children. We enjoyed taking occasional family trips but weren’t able to get away as often as we would have liked.

As we approached an empty nest, however, we started looking around to see what this stage of life held for us and realized we would enjoy traveling more again. Dennis is also a fine art photographer, so taking trips together helps us to get out and see beautiful sights that he can capture with his camera.

We have started a YouTube channel, so we can also share our trips that way. We hope we can encourage and inspire others to experience life together while traveling and enjoying our beautiful state.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Creating a Travel YouTube channel has had its challenges. First, traveling can be expensive! The cost of buying an RV and a truck which can pull it isn’t in our current budget without going into major debt – which is something we aren’t willing to do.

We bought a tiny camper that our current SUV can pull, and we’re having fun exploring with that for now. We hope to buy a slightly larger truck and camper someday so that we’ll be more comfortable taking longer trips across the country, but for now, this is working for us.

We’ve also had to learn a lot about YouTube and marketing to grow our channel. We definitely view those pesky algorithms as an obstacle! We’re having fun, though, even if we’re growing a bit more slowly than we would like. We continue trying to improve and share the lessons we’re learning on our own adventures.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Dennis works full-time as a design engineer, so right now, we’re fitting in our travel and photography whenever we can. It mostly happens during Dennis’s vacation time or on weekends.

It can feel hectic to run several side hustles while also working full-time, but we’re enjoying having this project to work on together. And we hope that someday he will have the opportunity to work from the road so that we can get out and explore as much as possible while we’re young enough to enjoy it.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
One thing that sets us apart from others is that we’re older than the average YouTuber. Our audience is mainly families and couples who are also approaching the empty nest. We try to provide value by making people laugh but also by sharing camping tips and tricks that we learn along the way.
