Today we’d like to introduce you to Dawn Barr
Dawn, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey started when my children were young and I was a stressed out single Mama. My children have very sensitive skin, allergic to everything over the counter and I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia. I started researching natural remedies and skin care products and to purchase a few of them. I noticed that they worked very well but too expensive on my single Mom wages working 3 jobs. So I began to do research to make my own products. I read countless books, I took online courses to receive my degree in natural skincare formulation and I continued to learn. I made many formulations with lots of trial and error until I felt happy with my products. I made products for my family and myself for many years and began to give them away as gifts. People loved them and said I should sell these so I started selling locally to people that heard from others that loved them and today I’m in my second year at Western Market chalet j in downtown Muskegon. My goal is to keep my prices affordable so everyone can enjoy them and continue to formulate natural, clean products the whole family can use.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road has been a bit bumpy, finances were tight in the beginning so I could only purchase supplies in small quantities. I had to work multiple jobs to support my family so my business had to be put on the back burner a few times. I was my mother’s sole caregiver when she became sick 2 years ago and eventually passed before my first year in the chalet and at The Muskegon Market and Mercantile in Muskegon. She would have been so proud. But it was all worth it and has only made me stronger and more resilient. Through it all I never gave up my dream of owning my own business and supplying my community with products they can trust and afford.

All Essentially Free makes products using clean, natural ingredients. We strive to keep our prices low so everyone can afford them. I’m known for making natural skincare products like lotions, pain creams, and soap. I am proud to make products that do no harm. We source our ingredients locally when possible and know what is in our ingredients. What sets us apart is knowing that we try to keep our prices affordable no price gouging here. I want everyone to be able to enjoy them, not just the upper class. I want people to know that I understand the kids with super sensitive skin, the stressed out Mama wanting a simple clean routine. The people living with chronic pain and want natural relief. My line is always improving and I continue to learn and improve. I’m always open to chat and create new items as needed.
How do you define success?
Success to me is being happy with the person you are. Believing in yourself and doing what makes you happy because we never know when our time is up. Knowing people trust you and your products and being able to formulate products that people love and come back for time and time again.
