Today we’d like to introduce you to David Fox.
Hi David, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Metro Jiu-Jitsu was born out of a long-held dream. Founded in 2018 in the city of Southgate, our headquarters started as a vision between myself, David Fox, and my partner, Mohammad Abdrabboh. After beginning my own Jiu-Jitsu journey back in 2009, it was always my goal to open a gym that would become a community hub for martial arts.
In November of 2019, after leaving my day job hanging commercial doors, I committed to Metro Jiu-Jitsu full-time. Just a few months later, the COVID-19 lockdowns hit, and like many businesses, we faced the challenge of being deemed non-essential. This was a significant hurdle, but we quickly pivoted by launching the Metro Summer Program, helping kids develop leadership skills and maintaining our community spirit.
Since then, we’ve grown to three campuses, including a second Jiu-Jitsu location in Westland. Today, Metro Jiu-Jitsu proudly serves over 400 members, offering classes for everyone from age three to 103, helping them learn Jiu-Jitsu and kickboxing. It’s been quite a ride, and we’re excited for what’s next!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not at all. In Jiu-Jitsu we’re trying to get close and smother. When covid hit we got the cops called on us, health dept, and several people tried to shut us down.
Good prevailed
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Most are surprised to find that we have a HUGE program for kids who are diagnosed with autism or ADHD
and an equally large program for adults suffering from PTSD
