Today we’d like to introduce you to D’Asia Scott.
Hi D’Asia, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
So, I always knew that I wanted to work for myself but just didn’t know what I could actually see myself doing. After graduating high school, my mom insisted that I go to college even though I had no desire to have a real career in anything that required a degree. I took some basic classes my freshmen year to kind of figure out my direction and still felt lost. In my spare time, I always enjoyed doing eyebrows and eyelashes on my roommates and they loved it, but it was nothing I took serious, or thought could make me money. The next year, in 2016, I tore my ACL and was forced to move back home. It was such a depressing time, but my mind wouldn’t stop trying to figure out what was next. I began researching lash extension classes, and every class said that I needed to be a Licensed Esthetician in order to participate so I started looking for courses to become a Licensed Esthetican lol. There were no programs in Grand Rapids at the time, and with my post-surgery, I couldn’t travel very far. In the summer of 2017, I got a notification from Douglas J Aveda saying that they were starting their first Esthetician courses. I signed up and spent the next 6 months finding a new passion while taking this course, which turned out to be body waxing! I graduated April 2018 and got my first job with a large waxing franchise in August 2019! I spent the next 7 months figuring out how could I become my own boss doing this same thing. I took a leap of faith, and in March 2020 I purchased my first solo suite, and I’ve been working for myself since then.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I think now that I’m older, I find more beauty in the struggle. Anything that comes easy, I question it, sadly. So, although it has not been a smooth road, I give myself grace for every struggle I went through along the way. After graduating, I thought that I could just post a picture, and things would take off for me. I was totally wrong. No one had any reason to trust that I was good at what I did so I had to prove myself. I started taking my first three clients ever in my grandmother’s basement. Asking them to spread the word, but things were still so slow. Honestly, I was ready to give up. I was being denied jobs in the field for almost a year, and I was beginning to think I made the wrong choice. When I finally landed my job at the waxing company, everything fell right in place! I was starting to get overwhelmed (in a good way) with the amount of clientele! Then, just when I thought things were going great, I was let go from the company due to low retail sales. This is when I remembered the bigger picture. What was supposed to bring me down pushed me to keep going. Two days later, I got my suite, then exactly one year after that, I outgrew the 200 sqft. room and opened my brick-and-mortar!

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Patience. Even when things started moving fast for my business, I never rushed the process. I took my time with my business plan during the pandemic and was very strategic about how I wanted things to go. The saying is if your business can make it past two years, then you can do another five. Even with competition, industry changes, inflation, etc, I’ve always remained focused and worried about my business.
