Today we’d like to introduce you to Darren Clark.
Hi Darren, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
The interest for wanting to capture content started in high school in a class where we learned news broadcasting, you could find the school’s VHS ENG camera everywhere I went, my teacher Ms. Woo took a liking to me and allowed me to have the class twice, editing all the schools content reel to reel. After high school, a few years later, I enrolled at Specs Howard. They taught radio and TV broadcasting, and I went on to pursue my career in video production.
After graduating and years of learning as much as possible in an expensive and closed-door industry to get into I was hired at Wayne State University where I was under the tutelage of mentor Darryl Shreve. Once the 5-year run at WSU ended, I was hired at a post-production house here in Michigan learning the workflow of commercial editorial and finishing. No longer being a fit there and video equipment still out of the budget, photography became an interest after being easier for beginners. An old colleague from WSU reached out about an opportunity at the Boys and Girls club of Southeastern Michigan. Since taking that contract and growing with the new and current CEO, Shawn Wilson, the vision of operating a company that produces content for high-end clients as well as small businesses has been a dream come true.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I would say the road hasn’t been smooth, but when you know you have to travel on a dirt road to get where you need to go, you prepare for the journey and all the unexpected bumps along the way.
Some of the challenges I’ve faced have been putting trust and faith into uncharted territory. For years of trying to pursue this dream, family members did help out a ton but weren’t fully supportive of the decision to make this a career because it had never been done before.
In this business, it can be feast or famine sometimes, and I have a beautiful wife who understands how that works, being a former business owner herself.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
