Meet Darell Red Campbell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Darell Red Campbell.

Hi Darell, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started producing music at the age of 11. My father showed me the ropes on an old, borrowed 8inch Fostex tape machine, and two incredible things happened that week. First one, I recorded a whole rap album with my older cousin. Secondly, I recorded over everything else on the tape! I graduated to my own 4track tape then got introduced to the computer and digital world. Almost simultaneously, I was introduced to formal piano and violin in school. As a young sports fanatic, I was dead-set on being a professional athlete (just like most young boys). When I became a teen, I realized how extraordinary my musical gifts were a little more! I took it more seriously. I joined the Detroit Symphony Civic Youth Orchestra and Jazz band. I was ready to hit the road by the time I graduated high school. My first tour experience was with The Dramatics. Tours kept coming, gigs opportunities became the norm, as well as production. I have earned placements on platinum-selling Eminem gold-selling albums with K’Jon, Yolanda Adams, and Dorinda Clark-Cole. I have performed two Presidential inaugural balls, NPR tiny desk with Royce da 5’9, Detroit Jazz fest with Kris Johnson, and many more. I am the current director of the Creative Jazz Ensemble for Detroit Symphony Civic Youth Ensembles, head engineer for Motown Museums’ Hitsville Next, and still producing and writing new music.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My road has been unusually smooth. I accredit this to finding my God-given purpose early in my career. If I had spent more time figuring things out, I might have had more struggles. Instead, I found my purpose and focused on that while letting God be the director of how things worked out. My motto is: to be specific with my goals but flexible with how I reach them. This helps things work out smoothly.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a musician, songwriter, and producer. “I play every instrument that you don’t have to blow.” I am also a full-time music teacher, mentor, and minister. What sets me apart from other is my ability to my unique blend experience with the things that I teach and create. I’m happy black man with red hair and freckles who is classically trained but loves hip hop and God! I’m completely set apart!

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
I have plenty. My childhood was filled loads of good things. Playing sports with my brothers, traveling with my parents, and always having access to different things. My best would have to be recording an album with my cousin at 11. We were going to be the next version of Kris Kross!
