Today we’d like to introduce you to Daniel Landau.
Hi Daniel, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
After going through IVF and doing an Embryo transfer my wife and I suffered a devastating miscarriage during the first trimester. When that happened, I felt completely alone and without any network of people who could understand what I had gone through. My wife had all of the support in the world as miscarriage is usually focused on the woman. No one ever asks the spouse how they are feeling or doing. This made me want to change that and I went back to school to get my masters in nonprofit management which helped me spearhead my nonprofit organization called men’s helpline.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
The beginning was not a smooth road. Starting an organization can be a challenge. Some of the struggles I encountered included getting men to open up about the topic of Infertility, miscarriage, still birth.
As you know, we’re big fans of Men’s Helpline. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Men’s Helpline a New Jersey Nonprofit Corporation (“Men’s Helpline”) was incorporated in the State of New Jersey on December 7, 2021, exclusively for charitable and educational purposes within the meaning of Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986, as amended. In particular, Men’s Helpline was incorporated to provide emotional support and educational services to all men who struggle with miscarriage, infant loss, stillbirth, and infertility. Men’s Helpline was formed to encourage and support men and enable them to speak about their emotions when faced with these troubling situations freely and without judgment.
What sets us apart from others is that I focus on men. There are no other nonprofits in the United States who focus on just men when dealing with miscarriage, infant loss, stillbirth, and infertility.
I am most proud of the Men Talk Podcast where our guests come onto the show and share their personal stories and journeys while offering tips and advice to others going through it.
I want your readers to know that they are alone when going through these challenges. The statistics show that 1/4 pregnancies end in a miscarriage, 1/8 couples go through IVF, 1/160 births end in a still birth and 1/1,000 babies pass away from SIDS.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you.
I was lucky to have been in a class called project workshop for my master’s degree in nonprofit management and leadership. This class enabled me to take an idea I had and turn it into a real nonprofit organization that can actually help people.
In addition, I feel that everything in life happens for a reason. If I had not suffered a miscarriage, I would not have seen the void of help for men in this area.
