Today we’d like to introduce you to D-Love Muzic.
Hi D-Love, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I began playing hand percussion (i.e., bongos, congas, & drums) at age 9 in church. By age 14, I began playing for a professional gospel recording artist. I would perform in concerts, festivals, theaters, & stage plays. This would transition into me studying many different genres of music like jazz, rock, hip hop, techno, house, Afro-Cuban, etc because I wanted to be versatile in my craft. Around my late teens / early 20s, I began studying music production, electronics, & studio engineering.
My first major industry show was playing percussion for Hip-Hop legends Salt n Pepa. I would go on to work with award-winning and nominated artists such as Floetry, Algebra, Tonex a.k.a B-Slade, Eric Roberson, Anthony David, Karen Briggs, Waajeed, Zo! and Carmen Rodgers of The Foreign Exchange, Mike Ellison, SIAS, Saxappeal, Ideeyah, Wanda Nero Butler, LaShun Pace, Collective Peace & The Detroit Ballet to name a few.
As an artist, producer, music & technical director, I began producing projects for other artists & co-producing stage shows & productions. I would find my own musical identity & sound by producing techno, house, & experimental music. This genre spoke to my creativity & I felt like this was my purest musical expression. I would begin doing live solo shows & backing other electronic artists as well. I since have released 5 EPs. under my stage moniker D-Love Muzic. In 2019 my song Celestrial got a placement on Waajeed’s Detroit Love Vol.3 for Carl Craig’s label Planet E Records, which was a huge honor.
I’ve also had placements on TV, films, stage plays, albums, commercials, and radio both international and domestic. I have co-created & performed in many stage productions, presentations and award shows that have toured through many prestigious colleges, theaters, governmental programs & corporations.
Rather being a member of an ensemble or a one-man band, my unique approach in fusing traditional, modern, and electronic percussion with the latest production techniques & multiple music styles, has garnered me the reputation as a valued asset to every artist, company, and venue I’ve had the pleasure of working with.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As in anything in life worth having, you’re going to have to stay consistent. Being an artist or performer in any capacity requires not only diligence but a business mindset, a good personality, some level of good communication & conflict restitution skills to say the least.
Also, the steady pressure of booking shows, creating new content, being active on social media & keeping in the loop of maintaining constant work coming in from other artists & companies, can be daunting sometimes but the end result is worth it.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a multi-instrumentalist, producer & electronic artist. I make Techno/House/Experimental music. My sound has been referred to as Blue Vibes & the Celestial sound.
I specialize in music production, show programming & hand percussion (both acoustic & electronic) & live shows.
I’m most proud of the music I’ve created & all the work I’ve done with so many great artist.
What sets me apart from others is that I not only understand the musical side of creating art but the technical side as well. My business tag is “Where The Organic Meets The Digital”, which I try to embody with every song I release or project I collaborate on.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up.
My favorite memory as a child was going to my first music store with my late mother. She purchased my very first set of bongos when I was 9. She told me if I kept playing, that she would upgrade the bongos as my talent progressed. She would hold true to that promise. She purchased her last set when I was 14 when I started playing professionally. After that, I could afford to buy my own. Thanks, Mom!
