Meet Crystal Herbert of Mast’s Coffee

Today we’d like to introduce you to Crystal Herbert

Hi Crystal, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I bought an old vacant building in downtown Sebewaing in 2018 and began renovating it in hopes of putting my business degree to use and opening a business. It wasn’t until I exposed the original brick during the renovations that I knew it was meant to be a coffee shop.
I immersed myself in all things coffee and learned the trade while finalizing renovations and designing the space. I opened in Oct 2020 with the goal of providing a place of community while also offering a great product with only the best ingredients. It’s been a great ride thus far as l look to celebrate five years in business this fall.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I opened during the madness of covid. I had announced our opening right before everything really got crazy. With that much money and time invested into the shop I didn’t have any choice but to sink or swim. So navigating that was definitely a major struggle along the way, but we more than survived it.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Mast’s Coffee?
Mast’s Coffee really is a hidden gem. Our space is beautifully designed with a welcoming atmosphere for hanging out or working remotely. We offer a wide variety of drinks with top ingredients and a small food selection. Our best selling drinks are Caramel Macchiatos and Cold Brews with flavored Cold Foam. Our products are all really top notch and made with great care.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
There is always work to be done when owning a business and it’s important to implement a work/life balance. My business hours are indicative of my top priority, which are my children.
