Meet Cody Colbert of Van Buren Township

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cody Colbert.

Hi Cody, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I always been fascinated with drawing at a young age. I really started focusing on drawing when I was in highschool and I was bored in class most of the time. Eventually I grew to love drawing portraits of people and it slowly evolved into trying new mediums and other things to draw. Now I draw people, cartoons, and different designs as commission work for people with the 10 plus years of practice and pushing myself to be better. I don’t ever think of myself as a master of anything because I’m still always learning.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My health I would say is my biggest struggle. I have Crohn’s disease (A chronic inflammatory bowel disease that affects the lining of the digestive tract.) and been dealing with it for about 8 years now. It affects my energy to do things or if I have a flare I’m pretty much not in the mood to do anything. Recently this past year I’ve been in out of the hospital because of it. In November I had surgery for an ileostomy and had to learn how to live with that. Now I keep up with going to my treatment with the hopes of being a good position for my next surgery.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m an artist who specializes in portraits, cartoons, and designs. The mediums I love to work with is pen, markers, acrylic, and watercolors. Right now I’m trying to make my own comic which has been a slow process but it’s been my favorite projects. If I had to say what I’m known for the most is my one drawing of a ghost in front of a neon Seven eleven sign, everyone always comments how they love that piece and it sold the most when I sold stickers. I work at UofM Hospital and in my free time there I like to do little drawings and pair them up around the units for patients and staff to see and a lot people there ask me all the time when the next ones will be up. I’m proud of the fact that put a lot of time and effort in learning new materials because I love to always push myself out of my comfort zone. I think what sets me apart from others is that I don’t focus on one medium or style, I love to try new things all the time to see what sticks.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I loved watching movies, anime, and playing video games. I believe it all played in a part for me to have a passion for drawing. I always would be fascinated by how everything was made and tried to replicate it myself. For the longest I always wanted to be a Concept Artist for video games
