Today we’d like to introduce you to Christine Conway.
Hi Christine, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
I have always been an animal lover. Even as a little girl I was enamored by the dog in the room wherever we went. Whenever I am in a crowd or public place, I am drawn to the animals I see. It was this love that sparked my desire to rescue animals in need. We have adopted several rescue dogs and cats over the years.
A few years ago, a very dear friend shared her knowledge of candle-making with me. After a few months of testing, designing labels, and creating the brand, I opened my Etsy shop. I wanted to create dog-themed candles to help raise money for local pet shelters. I honestly didn’t know if there would be a market for them. I just kind of went with it, in hopes people would connect with them.
The name Black Dog Candle Shoppe comes from the “Black Dog Syndrome” which references the fact that black dogs and cats are often the last animals to be adopted, and as a result, tend to be euthanized more often.
I have been in business for two years now and I’m happy to report that it’s been quite successful. The business is growing and has allowed me to donate approximately $2,000 to the Michigan Animal Rescue League. I’m hoping to expand the business as time goes on to enable us to help as many animals as possible.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I started the business during the pandemic. Like most businesses, we experienced supply shortages, shipping delays, and rising prices. This caused us to have to change vessel styles and suppliers. It was a challenge but luckily, we were able adapt and find reliable suppliers to keep the business moving forward.
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Spending time with my family. We had dogs and cats growing up, I had a horse for a while as well. I enjoyed riding, raising fish and of course, loved my dogs. I had amazing parents who supported all these interests. I had a very happy childhood; I am extremely thankful for that.
