Meet Chris McGrath of Absolute Plumbing

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris McGrath.

Hi Chris, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’ve always been a very hands on guy. I started working at 12 and just kept learning and growing since. I’ve tried alot of different jobs but anything that required me to “punch in” drove me nuts.
I settled into landscaping and handy man work for a while but, there wasn’t much room for growth and opportunity. I just stumbled into plumbing about 20 years ago; the owner of the company needed a laborer to help repair his roof. He liked my work and asked if I wanted to be a plumber.
Starting out was really exciting for me. Everyday was something different.
It didn’t take me long to catch on and after a few years I was able to take my state journeyman exam.
I started managing his company and after a couple years I passed the state masters exam.
In 2015 I passed the last state required test, the contractors exam, and started my own business in my spare time.
Then covid happened, work slowed way down, I was left with a choice. I would have to fire the other employees at that company to keep myself working or I could risk it and go full time for myself. Best decision I ever made. Quality work gets noticed. I started by spending all the money I had on ads and job lead services but after less than a year I have done no advertising and we stay busy. Right now I have 2 really great guys working for me and we’re still growing.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest struggle I’ve had is finding good employees with good attitudes and work ethic who care about the quality of their work. You can teach anybody plumbing but you can’t teach them to care

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We are a full service plumbing company. We do everything from snaking drains to new construction. We’ll fix your faucet, put in a water heater, or repipe your whole house. We are always honest when diagnosing any problems and never try to “upsell” anyone on anything they don’t need. We offer quality work at a fair price. We build customer relationships that last a long time.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I moved to Howell in 2021 and the past few years have been great. Everybody is easy to get along with. The city puts on a ton of events that everyone in my family enjoys. Some of the drivers here can be a bit obnoxious sometime though. There are alot of almost country roads out here so it seems like everyone is driving 100mph everywhere they go.
