Meet Carter Hatfield of Perfect Storm Comics and Games

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carter Hatfield.

Carter, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
In 2011 I lost my job and made a decision to jump into something I had always wanted to do but never believed I could and started by CCG business. It started with two small boxes of cards on a shelf, and my (now) wife found it very hard to understand how these cards would be able to support a family. Over the years I grew things to the point where I was able to partner up with a local retail store chain, and a year later I was able to buy out one of the stores. After a few years of growing that store I was able to open a second location a bit closer to where I lived. What started as two small boxes of cards on a shelf has prospered and grown into to growing mid-size stores.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There have been a number of struggles along the way. I have learned lots of hard lessons along the way, and the internet, and eventually COVID have changed the face and patterns of my business in multiple ways in the last ten years. Its always a challenge to stay on top of changes, but that is part of what makes this business interesting.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We have 2 local game and comic book stores, in Battle Creek and Paw Paw Michigan. We offer a variety of games including Pokemon, Magic the Gathering, One Piece, Warhammer 40000 and more. We, from the beginning, have focused on serving our community and giving everyone a warm, safe, welcoming place to enjoy their hobbies. We pride ourselves on being inclusive, fun, supportive and making real connections with our customers.

What matters most to you?
Family is the most important thing in my life, they define who we are and why we are here. Outside of family, integrity and morals are very important to me. I believe in building a business through relationships, by taking care of people. A line I frequently use with my staff is “we do the right things for the right reasons” – and that is what guides us in our daily decision making.
