Meet Caroline Wright of Good Neighbor Farm

Today we’d like to introduce you to Caroline Wright.

Hi Caroline, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
Hi! We are Caroline and Seth of Good Neighbor Farm. We met working on a farm in West Virginia in 2015, and after going our separate ways for some years – exploring agriculture further – we reunited, started our farm in the Spring of 2021, and decided to get married! We rent land from Ann Arbor Township’s Tilian property — 4400 Pontiac Trail, Ann Arbor, MI. We both have a passion for working with nature, integrating with our community, and developing a farm practice that is sustainable both for the land and for us. Good Neighbor Farm is a small ecological farm that uses organic and minimal tillage practices to produce high-quality and nutritious produce. We specialize in fresh market produce: salad mix, tomatoes, lettuce, fresh herbs, onions, garlic, greens, peppers, eggplant, cucumbers, etc., and we offer a variety of CSA subscriptions throughout the year. You can also find us at the Dixbroro Farmers Market on Fridays and Depot Town (Ypsilanti) and Chelsea Farmers Markets on Saturdays. We are not interested in growing large but growing good. Good Neighbor Farm follows organic practices but is not USDA Certified Organic. The land on which we grow is MAEAP (Michigan Agriculture Environmental Assurance Program) certified. Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Things have gone pretty well in the last two years. We are amidst our second season and growing strong!

Last year, it was just Seth and I working the farm — and it was a lot of work. That was probably the biggest challenge of last year, just long days of farming, most days of the summer. However, this year we were able to hire a farm hand for July – October, and it has been so great to have Joe Griffin working with us this year!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next, you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We are a small-scale organic vegetable farm. We are committed to being good stewards of the land we farm, focusing on minimal tillage, soil health, and crop rotation. We specialize in summer vegetables — salad mix, greens, cucumbers, eggplant, peppers, tomatoes, radishes, turnips, fresh herbs, green and fresh onions, lettuce, and more! We also grow some fall vegetables — cauliflower, winter squash, cabbage, storage onions, and garlic. And we grow spinach and a few other crops through the winter in our unheated high tunnels. We are committed to growing high-quality produce, and we are proud of our products! We have a variety of vegetable subscriptions to our farm (CSAs), we sell at local farmers’ markets, and to restaurants in Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti. Check out our online store and try a One-Time CSA Box to get a sample of our seasonal, local veggies.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I like that there is an interest in food, eating healthy, being active and appreciating nature, and a good arts scene.

After living in MN for 7 years, I dislike that there are no lakes here in Ann Arbor and that the winter is grey.
