Today we’d like to introduce you to Carmen Evans.
Hi Carmen, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Geesh! Where do I start? I would love to say my life has been roses and clear skies but that would definitely be a lie. From the womb, there were a few complications with the birth, but I survived just as I have in so many situations in my life. Although God saw fit for my arrival life was about to get interesting, to say the least: doctors passing me off to the nurses to check me out, the examination, the shakes, and not eating as I should have been eating. The extended time in the hospital came with information that would try to shape my life. The tests came back positive confirming I had drugs in my system. Nevertheless! God still had a plan for my life. The enemy thought he would kill this seed before having an opportunity to BECOME, but God! After being discharged from the hospital and going home with a relative, life began to shape itself with many twists and turns. I can’t begin to tell you all that happened, however, you have to get one of my newest books (Lyfe Happens). Just know that my life has been a constant fight from birth to foster care and now being enrolled in my last year of my doctoral program. I sit back at times and think the perseverance that God has place on the inside of me has never failed me yet. Wanting or should I say needing to give back to the world what God has successfully brought me through is where the Youth Resource Center LLC was birthed. Although I’m still developing the business to service our youth in whatever area they are struggling in. I know that it will be of great success! I look forward to assisting our youth in lewd of them going into the criminal justice system. Their time with the center will be a time of reckoning with their mistakes and becoming success stories.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
This has been a difficult road, but I am here, and I am continuously ready to fight the good fight of faith. The abuse alone the way is what made me who I am today STRONG, RESILIENT, BOLD, and most of all CONFIDENT in who I am.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Well I am highly sought after as a mentor and a life coach to our youth, in addition, I am a 3x author of some amazing books, “Covenant Relationships” Understanding what God desires for us “Lyfe Happens” How God sustained me, and “Let’s Be Friends” a book for elementary students on autism. I am the founder and president of the Youth Resource Center LLC, which provides counseling, life/educational coaching services, and all Youth services which is based in the City of Southfield, Michigan but operated in Detroit urban community. I am considered by many to be a wonderful friend, mentor, motivator, and a woman of great loyalty and character. I have received endless acknowledgements and testimonials of how lives that were impacted through my positive influence.
Clearly, my heart is for the youth as demonstrated by my efforts, time, and money invested in their forward progression, well-being, and attainment of the necessary life skills to be successful. Through my volunteerism and mentoring with different organizations throughout the City of Detroit, I have helped sponsor, fund, and guide activities for high school seniors graduating and assisted in enrollment in higher institutions of learning. I have attended parent-teacher conferences and graduations for students, drove students to and from libraries, checked on them while in class to ensure they were on task, and even negotiated with teachers to allow students the opportunity to make up schoolwork so they could graduate on time with their class. I have brought groceries for students, paid for books, and provided support for students to participate in many extracurricular activities that otherwise, they may not have been privy to.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I see myself operating a full youth Resource Center connected to the Criminal Justice Center changing lives one day at a time. If you get a chance, check me out on my Podcast Detroit Table Talk (FB, Anchor, Spotify) with my Co-Host Drow. We come on weekly Saturdays 5p and don’t forget you can request a copy of any three of my books Covenant Relationships (Understanding what God desires for us), Lyfe Happens (How God sustained me), or Let’s Be Friends (Book on Autism for elementary children).
