Today we’d like to introduce you to Carmelita Samuel.
Hi Carmelita, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I graduated from the School of Social Work at the University of Michigan, motivated to become a therapist because I wanted to help others heal. I began my career at a county jail in Ann Arbor, providing mental health services to incarcerated men and women. During this time, I cultivated a deep curiosity for healing and expanded my work to include both direct and indirect services within the domestic violence movement. My desire to provide more personalized counseling led me to leave agency-based work and start my own practice, where I could offer an integrated approach to trauma-informed care, blending evidence-based methods such as EMDR with mindfulness-based practices like yoga. Since then, I have been growing my small business, offering traditional counseling as well as group services that incorporate somatic-based techniques.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My journey began many years ago within the criminal justice system. Working in this environment was challenging, both professionally and personally, and taught me to grow as a professional. I discovered that humility and empathy are the greatest strengths required in this work. Being a therapist does not mean you know everything or have it all together; it means recognizing each person’s humanity and believing that healing is possible. Through this journey, I found my path and learned to navigate the barriers this field presents in order to best support my clients.
We’ve been impressed with Mental Balance & Wellness Practice , but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
