Today we’d like to introduce you to Caitlin Kane.
Hi Caitlin, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My journey as an entrepreneur began when I was just a little girl. At six years old, I found myself sitting in my closet, giving myself a haircut. My mother was horrified—and had to fix it with a mushroom cut just to even things out. From that point on, I was hooked. As I got older, I discovered a true passion for beauty, doing friends hair and makeup for school dances like homecoming and prom.
Although I had a natural talent for beauty, I wasn’t immediately set on pursuing it as a career. I initially enrolled at Macomb Community College to study psychology but quickly realized it wasn’t the right fit. Just three weeks into the school year, I made a bold decision to follow my passion and enrolled at David Pressley School of Cosmetology.
Once I finished school, I worked at several salons, always taking mental notes of what could be improved or done differently.
After a decade of building a strong and loyal clientele, I took the leap and began working for myself in a salon suite. I’ve now been a successful independent hair and makeup artist for five years. But I knew I wasn’t done yet.
As someone passionate about health, wellness, and clean beauty, I often felt underwhelmed by the haircare products available on the market—especially shampoos and conditioners. That’s when I decided to create my own. After extensive research and a commitment to clean, effective ingredients, I launched Kane Clean Beauty —blending my love for beauty with a mission to offer something better for both people and the planet.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My journey into entrepreneurship has been anything but easy. I’ve walked away from salons that didn’t align with my values, worked with clients where the fit just wasn’t right, and even poured three years of effort into building a business with a lifelong friend—only to watch it fall apart.
But these experiences shaped me. They taught me resilience, self-awareness, and the importance of alignment in business. True entrepreneurship isn’t about getting it right every time—it’s about refusing to give up, taking smart risks, and learning from every setback. Every challenge brought me closer to the business I was meant to build.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As a professional hair and makeup artist, I specialize in soft glam makeup and custom, lived-in hair color. My approach combines detailed consultations, natural-looking results, and efficient service delivered with precision.
Two of the most meaningful moments in my career reflect the heart of why I do what I do. In 2016, I had the incredible opportunity to do hair at New York Fashion Week—an unforgettable experience that pushed my creativity and skill to new levels. More recently, I had the privilege of teaching a man how to apply makeup for his wife, who is battling cancer. These two experiences couldn’t have been more different, yet both were deeply fulfilling and reminded me of the powerful impact beauty can have—whether it’s on a runway or in the quiet moments of everyday life.
What makes you happy?
I find happiness in sharing my knowledge, helping others look and feel their best, and being a supportive listener. It also brings me great joy to provide clean, non-toxic beauty products that contribute to people’s overall health and well-being.
