Meet Brian Knoll of Au Gres

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brian Knoll.

Hi Brian, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
In the early 1990’s my parents had a piece of property that was an old gravel quarry. My dad had always wanted to develope it somehow. Me and him had both started golfing around that same time. I cut down and old field to build a driving range.
My dad and his dad started an excavating company in the early 70’s and I went into this with my dad when graduated in 1987. After opening the driving range my dad asked if I wanted to try to build a golf course. So we started. Front 9 was built a hole at a time. Back 9 was built all together. The hole process took roughly ten years with many additions since. Family and friends helping in the process.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The usual struggles. Money mainly. Trial and error. Something’s worked and others didn’t.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Self employed. Farmed as a kid till
I was 16. Went to work with my dad in his excavating company and 6 years later started building a golf course.
Proud of the business we built and in the last 5 years what my wife has added to the business. I think course upkeep and price sets us apart from others. Proud that we’ve built a course that is like no other. We are known for our family run business and welcoming people.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Pretty tough starting a business without much capital. Money helps. It takes everything you have to build something like this. If you put your mind to something you can build your dream.
Credit is a must. Stay true and honest that builds a good business reputation.
As much as you want to your never gonna please everyone.
