Meet Brenton Thurman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brenton Thurman. 

Hi Brenton, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
It began a few months after graduating from Michigan State University. I worked as a Project Manager at a financial advising firm and noticed that it was typically the same demographic of people that received financial advice. It made me think to myself, “What about my friends and I, or anyone else that finds financial advice hard to access?” It turns out, about 80% of people don’t have convenient access to a financial advisor like we should. Myself and many of my colleagues were at a time in our lives where we were making very important financial decisions (buying/leasing cars, moving into apartments, starting 401(k)s, taxes, interest rates, etc.). The help of a financial professional would have been a great resource to have in order to avoid making any wrong choice. That’s when I knew that an affordable and accessible solution should exist. 

I immediately took the idea to two of my entrepreneurial-spirited colleagues, and we built what we believe to be the most affordable, accessible, convenient, and least intimidating way to speak face-to-face with an experienced financial professional; especially for the people that can’t afford being a client of a traditional advisor. Money Pickle was created for everyone to look to when they find themselves in a ‘money pickle.’ 

Like many convenient instant-service apps (Uber, DoorDash, Lyft), Money Pickle is a free app anyone can download. After a quick sign-up process, you can have the ability to instantly call or schedule a virtual call with an experienced financial professional and ask any question you want. For only $1.50/minute, our pricing structure is similar to the cost of other instant-service apps. Only with Money Pickle it could be saving you thousands of dollars’ worth of mistakes. 

Money Pickle was created in July of 2021, and we currently have a working service available in the app store today. We constantly are improving our user experience and will only continue to get better for our users! 

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Like many new technology startups, it’s almost never a smooth road. While us co-founders have college degrees in the business field, nothing can really prepare you to start a fully functioning company until you actually do so. We have learned so much along the way and absorb information like sponges from any resource we can find. It’s been a confusing yet very exciting journey so far. 

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
What sets us apart from others is our team. With myself and other young minds working at Money Pickle, we know exactly what to create for the new generation of technology and how people prefer to get things done in today’s world. Most people love the convenience of staying at home, whether it’s ordering dinner and groceries or even booking a therapy/doctor’s appointment. Speaking with a financial professional should be just as easy and available to everyone. 

Our team isn’t only younger workers; we also have the help of specialized mentors that are industry experts who help us make sure the service we are providing is of the highest quality. 

What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memory was probably starting a company with my cousin when we were 14. We always wanted to create something ourselves and never stopped brainstorming new ideas for businesses. We started an aerial photography company and traveled across the country, flying our drone and taking pictures for people. We are still living that dream as he is one of the co-founders of Money Pickle alongside me, and we’re enjoying every minute of it.
