Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Harrison.
Hi Brandon, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Well, I started my first business venture in 2018 as the brand owner of Young Dreamer Clothing. I was inspired by black-owned brands such as Karl Kani, Fubu, The Marathon Clothing, and a few others. What I noticed was how they all branded their items by showing how their clothing fit a particular lifestyle. As of late, I’ve been in front of the camera more but I’ve always been a person that prefers to work behind the scenes, so I felt a clothing brand was perfect for me. I could market a product by utilizing not only local models but models in different states without having to place myself in front of the camera, so it worked great for me.
I also started writing a book that would later become known as Facing the World: The Ten Principles in the same year. During the writing process, I felt I didn’t have enough experience in what I wanted to write about to really serve my intended audience justice. So, I decided to set my book aside for four years so I could gain the experience needed for the book I wanted to write. In the four years that passed I climbed up the ladder in my professional career, traveled to different places, and gained different lessons from personal experiences in my life. In the summer of 2022, I had that feeling to begin writing again, and I was able to finish my book in three months.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Well, yes and no. I always focus on the positives in any challenges that may come my way. Each struggle I learn more and it allows for me to grow. In the end I know my early experiences will serve a purpose down the line.
We’ve been impressed with H & W Publishing Group, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Thank you, I created H & W Publishing Group while I was writing my book actually. I always heard of how authors would go through issues trying to get their work published so I wanted to create a business that could allow for authors such as myself the opportunity to have their stories told. As of right now, H & W Publishing Group now has two books published including my first book “Facing the World: The Ten Principles” and a new children’s book titled “Umoja Dreams” which is written by Leah Webb and illustrated by Jauwana X. Umoja Dreams is currently available to pre-order online.
I also credit the experience I’ve gained from working in HR, that has been able to teach me how companies are run behind the scenes. Due to my career being in the Human Resources field I’m learning the different functions on how a business is supposed to be structured. Now, when I’m working on my passion’s I can use what I’ve learned from my career to build. Outside of HR, I’m also the Program Manager for Umoja Debate Team which is a non-profit organization which focuses on creating youth debate teams throughout the Detroit Public School District for the ages of 11-15. The benefit of debate in schools will reflect on how the students’ literacy, communication, resolution, and critical thinking will begin to rise.
What makes you happy?
For me, it’s about bringing value. I enjoy being able to bring something that’s valuable to whomever I’m around. Whether it’s in the community, work-life, friendships I try to make sure I’m bringing something of value to the situation. If I’m able to contribute to something in a positive way I’m happy.
