Today we’d like to introduce you to Braimah Lawal. Them and their team share their story with us below:
Born in Chicago, Illinois, and raised in Accra, Ghana, Braimah Tayo Lawal is a Nigerian – American artist working to show the world his vibrant art. His work is inspired by his bicultural background, exploring the experience of Africans, African Americans, and the diaspora cultures in the Western world.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
As an artist I face many obstacles but the main obstacle I normally face is within. I go through periods where I sometimes have doubts in my head , I am lucky enough to always overcome that obstacle. Sometimes it is very difficult to overcome, but I’m learning to get rid of the “self doubt”. I feel like the more steps I take on my journey of being an artist the more I am finding better ways to overcome the obstacle of “doubting myself”.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
When experiencing Braimah Tayo Lawal’s paintings, it’s evident every brushstroke has great depth and meaning behind it. Which makes sense because the Chicago-born Nigerian-American’s purpose, is to live his truth through art. With a strong connection to multiple cultures, Braimah is able to take inspiration from his childhood in Ghana, his high school years in Chicago, as well as other global endeavors, and turn them into multi-cultural expressions that resonate with all people. His ability to absorb his surroundings allows him to take this global perspective and express it in a way that not only represents himself but the very essence of what it means to be a human being
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I grew up in Accra, Ghana, and Lagos, Nigeria. I am the youngest of two older sisters, my family still resides in West Africa. I moved here at the age of 14 in hopes of a better opportunity at life.
