Meet Bradley Whalen of Kalamazoo, Michigan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bradley Whalen

Hi Bradley , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Music was something I grew up with whether it was my dad picking me up from day care playing rap music from the early 2000s to my mom dropping me off at school playing rock or country music in the mornings. Ever since I was little I had a passion for performance. Throughout elementary school I would perform in the talent shows and throughout middle school I was actively in theatre performing in various shows and skits. It was actually in 7th grade when I first tired to make music through the app “Rap Chat”. It wasn’t until 9th grade where I really fell in love with music and understood I wanted to make it. With the mix of loving to perform and loving music I knew I would be able make it. In 2020 I dropped my first official song and have only seen growth every year since then. I’ve been consistently dropping music on all platforms and I haven’t thought about stopping. I thank God, my parents, and everyone around me who supports what I do.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My biggest struggle has always been being able to consistently make music. I always have music in the vault ready to go but I’ve never had my own equipment to be able to make music all day. I get studio time from La Luna, consistently recording, mixing, and mastering with Samuel Peters, but that’s still only every so often. I made it my goal for 2025 to have a full home recording studio so I will be able to make music more often in the future.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
For my daily job I am a technician for the company Lawn Doctor and I love everything about it. I work outside using fertilizer and weed control to make lawns look better than golf courses! I work with really good people under very good conditions and couldn’t be happier with the pace of the job.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I never thought about finding someone to mentor me but having creative minds around me everyday gives me the right motivation and inspiration for my music. If it wasn’t for everyone around me who constantly encourages me, sends me beats, asks me to feature on a song, etc. – it would be hard for me to be so creative. My advice for anyone trying to network and connect with local artists would be to go to all the bar shows, house shows, open mics, etc. – even if you’re not performing. You will find plenty of creative minds in those areas who are just as enthusiastic about music as you are. I don’t have a mentor but I give thanks to everyone in my life who supports and helps what I do.
