Today we’d like to introduce you to Billie Foley, PMH-NP
Hi Billie, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
A few years ago, my life was at a crossroads. I had spent years working as a registered nurse, a career I found meaningful but knew I had more to offer. I wasn’t feeling fulfilled and knew that it was time for a change. So, amidst raising children and balancing all the responsibilities life throws at you, I made the bold decision to go back to school and earn my Master’s degree. My goal? To become a provider and make the transition from RN to Nurse Practitioner, specializing in psychiatry.
Psychiatry felt like a calling—a way to connect my professional expertise with personal experience. Having faced my own mental health challenges and witnessed the struggles of those I love, I knew this field was where I could make the greatest impact.
Fast forward to graduation and passing my board certification—I had accomplished a major milestone. But in the back of my mind, there was always the dream of having my own practice. That dream started to take shape through conversations with my mentor, Angie, who eventually became my business partner. With her encouragement and the unwavering support of my husband, who brought his marketing skills to the table, we began to form what would later become The Brain Bliss.
It wasn’t an overnight success, but the right connections seemed to fall into place and we are growing week over week. Today, Angie and I are thrilled to offer psychiatric services that include mental health evaluations, diagnoses, prescription medication management, and brief medical psychotherapy. Every step of this journey has brought us closer to creating a space where people can find the mental health care they deserve.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has been far from smooth. At the age of 45, I am a first-time business owner–I went to school to practice medicine, so I know very little about running a business.
There were definitely moments when I wondered if it would be easier to work for someone else and avoid the challenges that come with running your own practice. One of the biggest hurdles has been aligning the right services—finding the perfect electronic health record system, getting credentialed with insurance companies, and ensuring provision of modern conveniences like online scheduling and a patient portal. All of this while trying to keep patient care front and center felt overwhelming at times.
Another challenge has been ensuring that people fully understand the type of care I provide. As a psychiatric nurse practitioner, I can prescribe medication and manage psychiatric care, but I’m not a therapist or a physician. While I do my best to guide them toward the right services if needed, it’s been important to make sure people know what I specialize in—medication management and psychiatric care. Balancing this clarification with delivering exceptional patient care has been a learning process, but one that ultimately helps me serve patients better.
These business and patient care demands often lead to moments of doubt. I’d ask myself, “Can I really manage all of this without letting everyone down—my patients, my family, my partner, or myself?” But every time I meet a new patient and watch them find hope or see someone transform through the right treatment, I’m reminded why I chose this path. Helping people regain control of their lives is what I love most, and that keeps me inspired to push through any challenge that comes my way.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
At The Brain Bliss, I provide compassionate psychiatric care in a welcoming, safe space. I specialize in medication management and brief medical psychotherapy, focusing on mental health care that prioritizes balance in treatment and personalized care.
As a women-owned business, I take pride in developing individualized treatment plans that are rooted in the patient-provider relationship, free from the corporate demands of large healthcare organizations. My mission is to offer high-quality, patient-centered care that empowers individuals to achieve lasting mental wellness.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters most to me is delivering high-quality psychiatric care that is truly patient-centered. At The Brain Bliss, my priority is building strong, trusting relationships with my patients, ensuring that each person receives individualized attention and care. It’s about listening, understanding their unique needs, and working together to create a treatment plan that fits them—never a one-size-fits-all approach. I’m proud to have the freedom to focus on my patients, without the pressure of corporate healthcare agendas. Providing care that helps people achieve real, lasting results is what drives everything I do.
