Today we’d like to introduce you to Bill Keith.
Hi Bill, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I began volunteering at Trinity House in 1997 and joined the board of directors in 1999. I serve as the concert coordinator for the theatre. During the day I’m the Station Manager for 88.1 the Park, the student radio station for Plymouth-Canton Community Schools. My wife Heidi and I live in Redford.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Trinity House has been able to continue for 45 years because of dedicated board of directors, volunteers and patrons. Growing our audience is always a challenge because there are so many things people can do on their weekends. The intimacy of the space is one of our strengths and assets but it also creates challenges to pay artists and sustain the space. But we’ve been able to host some amazing productions and concerts, and the small size allow audience members and artists to connect in ways that aren’t possible in larger venues. We also get incredible response from the artists when they get to play for an audience that really connects with their music. It’s amazing to watch the audience response encourage the artist to dig deeper. All the challenges are worth it when you see that happen.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Trinity House Theatre?
“Trinity House has been such a great place to perform . . . great dynamic setting . . . perfect for acoustic music.” ~ Jason Dennie, songwriter and musician.
“An absolute gem of a listening room and with a dedication to the arts community unlike any other. I can’t say enough good things – we are thrilled to be in the audience or on the stage.” ~ Annie Capps, Ann Arbor based songwriter.
Trinity House seeks to build a connected community through music and the arts. The theatre was founded in 1981 as a venue for theatrical productions but the focus switched to music in 1999, and since then Trinity House has become one of the state’s best listening rooms. We present about 75 concerts per year.
We also provided a monthly meeting space for the songwriting collective Songwriters Anonymous. They work to help songwriters grow in their craft. We also host an open mic night every other Tuesday. In the past the theatre has provided a space for improv and writing groups.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
We’ve benefited from input from local artists and similar venues that we’ve connected with through state wide and national groups. The arts community is very generous in their willingness to help and support like minded groups. We’ve found that if you’re willing to help others you often find that others are willing to help you.
