Meet Bianca Williams- Carey of Locs of Love

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bianca Williams- Carey

Hi Bianca , can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My story Started in High School When I walked into a hair salon to use the bathroom Upon entering i found that my next door neighbor owned the salon so i began stopping in everyday after school. It wouldn’t take too much time before they offered to tech me how to prep clients to help the stylist along. At This time the shop was a very busy salon with seven stylist. I worked there as a salon stylist assistant for two years before going off to college. I studied for my undergraduate degree at Central State University an HBCU in Wilberforce Ohio. I completed that program in 2013 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Marketing. I soon after pursued my Masters Degree At Wright State University In Fairborn Ohio. I graduated in 2015 with a Masters of Science in Logistics and Supply Chain Management. Soon after i was hired at DHL where i worked for two years as a Case pick Superior of over 300 employees. Realizing this wasn’t my passion and i was home sick i decided to move back to Detroit in 2016. There i was able to feed back into what i loved doing which was hair. I was able to build a solid clientele and that allowed me to be able to resign from my 9-5 job . Now that i had my full focus in what i really wanted to do i founded Locs of Love in 2017. from there i was able to grow my brand by participating in Programs like Tech Towns Retail Boot Camp, Prosper Us Detroit and Motor City Match. In 2020 during Covid I opened my first retail store front location with a total staff of five people. We quickly outgrew that location and in 2021 I moved to a bigger location with a total staff of 13 people. Today we expanded into a 3050 sqft building and offering opportunity to over 20 people. I dream is to be able to expand to other states and build on our product like that launched in 2021. i want to continue to offer a safe for people wanting to follow their dreams but just don’t know how to get started. I love helping people and i want to continue to teach my classes in and effort to set folks on the right path.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t always been easy. Finding a work life balance was hard in the beginning because clients can be demanding and in had a young daughter at the time. learning to set boundaries was a big moment for me. another challenging time was opening during covid, We literally only had the doors open for a week before the world was shut down. we had to be closed for three months but when we reopened we were bombing with people needed their hair done or wanting to start locs. Also dealing with turn over was a obstacle that I’ve learned to overcome with understanding that people will use you until its no longer beneficial to them and move on with talents and clients you gave them and you will have to keep starting over with training and new team members. I’m use to it now and i have systems in Place to overcome this.

We are a Natural Hair Salon that specializes in the art of Twisting and Locking Hair. We also offer classes and our own products. Were known for our professionalism and having some of the most talented stylist in the city. We are most proud of our continuous five star ratings in customer serviced and pride ourselves in giving the ultimate expertise.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I would say to gain a valuable mentor its important not to burn bridges in the hair businesses because its a small community and you may never know who you will need help from down the line in your career. Its always important to treat people with respect for their business especially if they played a part in your professional growth. never be afraid to ask questions and reach out for understanding. Time is money so understand that you may have to pay to play if you want to get ahead because people spend years investing in the knowledge that have and its not always given away for free.
