Today we’d like to introduce you to April Lockett.
Hi April, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I literally stalked my way in the business lol… after I graduated, I was told I would never get a job in the industry fresh out of school and I made up in my mind that would not be my story. I showed up every day at the radio station (Hot 102.7 Detroit) every day for 3 months and stayed in the lobby for hours until the operation manager hired me. From there on I worked my way up from board op, to getting one day on air, to filling in for everyday part, to hosting every club in the city to, producing the Rickey Smiley Morning show… one thing about me when somebody tells me what I can’t do something it’s like music to my ears and I hit the ground running… That’s how I got through my journey and landed here with my own show after radio a lot of people counted me out and thought my career was over but God had other plans and gave me another platform to so what I love and that’s talk to people on my own terms and I love it here!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There were many struggles along the way, honestly, I needed the struggles because it’s made me appreciate where I am now. I was looked over many times in my career it was positions that I should have just walked in that I didn’t get. I had to constantly prove myself to people who didn’t believe in me but acted like they did which was heartbreaking. I struggled with a sense of entitlement as well which held me back, I wanted to blame everyone around me but sometimes you have to take a step back and look at yourself it’s not always them sometimes it’s you
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a multimedia personality I have a live show entitled “AskAP Live”. I interview people and highlight their talents and services. I’m known for my distinctive voice, electronic personality, and my many years of interviewing experience. I am most proud of not giving up on myself and the relationships I’ve built throughout my career. What sets me apart from others is I believe that timing is everything this world wants everything right now I’ve learned that sometimes you have wait for what will last.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
My show makes me happy! I’m in my zone, I’m in my element and nothing else matters. It’s definitely my happy place… I can be having a bad day but when Wednesday at 9 pm comes I instantly snap out of it. I think when you love something and you actually get to do it you there is no greater feeling.
