Today we’d like to introduce you to Alisha Brown.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
In my first year of college, my roommate and I randomly started a radio show on campus. While our show didn’t last long together, that was the day that the ‘radio bug’ bit me. After that, I continued to find lanes in radio that would help me learn everything I needed to know about radio and the music industry. Through a plethora of internships during college, I was able to land a promotions assistant job in Virginia Beach, VA after college. Thankfully, I was able to move back home to Washington, DC, to work as the local producer for the syndicated Russ Parr Morning Show. With my access to greats in the industry, I was able to be mentored into the personality that I am today. While I was producing the Russ Parr Morning Show, I created my own media brand, The Lituation Room Podcast under Lisha B Live Media LLC. With that podcast, I was able to grow my interviewing and hosting skills since I was able to speak with lesser-known artists. Through that success, I was able to curate two virtual concerts during the pandemic. After roughly two years, I moved to Grand Rapids to take a bigger leap of faith in my career. Now, I am the afternoon radio personality for Magic 104.9, living out my dreams every single day.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It was definitely not an easy road to get here. Plus, I am only in the starting stages of my career. The music industry, specifically radio, is hard to get in and then navigate through it. If you add the factor that I am a Black woman, it was even harder to advocate for myself and fight for respect. One of the struggles I had on my journey so far was taking the leap to leave my home to grow my career. Washington, D.C., is a top 10 market. It was my safe haven. I have plenty of connections there, plus my family and friends. When I decided to Michigan, I left everything and everyone I know to come to a completely different area. However, it was genuinely the best decision I could’ve made for myself.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I dabble in a lot of different areas of music. However, I am a radio personality. That is what I specialize in. But I also creative direct music videos, marketing rollouts for artists, etc. I also dabble in social media curation and management for small businesses.
I think what sets me apart from others in the industry and what I am most proud of go hand in hand. I am super vulnerable with my listeners. If you listen to my show or follow me on social media, I am the exact person that my friends and family know. I do not switch up the cameras or behind the microphone. I allow my listeners to know me for me which I think helps people relate to the content I put out.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
I am a Southern girl at heart. My mom’s family is from Plum Branch, South Carolina. So, every year before my uncle passed, my mother, uncle, cousins, and others would travel from D.C. to S.C. My cousins would ride dirt bikes and ATVs in the woods. It was a time every year when I could just be a child and hang out with my family in the most authentic and real way. No distractions.
