Hi Ali, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’m Ali Alawlaqi, and I’m 21 years old. I immigrated from Yemen to the U.S. when I was 9 years old, and ever since, I’ve been focused on building a future for myself and my family.
I earned my degree in Electrical Engineering before turning 21, graduating while many of my peers were still finding their direction. But my journey didn’t start or end with engineering. While I was in school, I got into the insurance world — not just to make money, but to learn. I worked with State Farm, and AAA, eventually managing an office and gaining a deep understanding of how the industry works from the inside out.
After a short stint working as a controls engineer, I realized my real passion was entrepreneurship and community service. That’s when I launched Ali Insurance Agency — an independent AAA-affiliated agency — with a mission to help people protect what matters most.
Insurance is more than a policy to me — it’s peace of mind, and I’m proud to provide that for families across Michigan.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road — but I don’t think I ever expected it to be.
I graduated with my Electrical Engineering degree on December 21, 2024, and was hired at Amentum shortly after, starting on January 27, 2025. I worked there while quietly laying the groundwork for something bigger. Less than three months later, on April 17, 2025, I opened the doors to my own AAA-affiliated insurance agency.
It’s been a fast, intense transition — going from student to engineer to business owner in under four months. And with that came a lot of pressure. I was navigating licenses, compliance, branding, leases, and the constant mental tug-of-war between risk and reward — all while trying to prove myself as a 21-year-old immigrant business owner in a competitive industry.
There were moments of doubt, moments where nothing seemed to go right, and moments where I had to make decisions with no clear answer — but I leaned into the discomfort and kept moving. What’s kept me going is the belief that if I don’t bet on myself, no one else will.
Every challenge so far has shaped me into a stronger, more focused version of myself. And honestly, I’m just getting started.
