Magnanomus of South East Michigan on Life, Lessons & Legacy

Magnanomus shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Good morning Magnanomus, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: Are you walking a path—or wandering?
A mix of both. I trust the process but act with vigilance. That is our power as human beings, to actively and consciously apply yourself. Not necessarily to make “the” world better, but to make YOUR world better, which can then effect everyone around you.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
MAGNANOMUS is a philosophy, a higher self to aspire to. I have found that music is one of the best forms of communication and connection, because whatever your politics we can always find a song to sing together. My new EP “Magnitude” will be available across all platforms Sept 1st, and it is a project I am proud to introduce into the world in which we find ourselves today. I’ve registered and copywritten my work, formed LLC’s and filed taxes on money made from songwriting, but there is nothing more valuable and productive than meditating on what it means to be my most MAGNANOMUS self.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
The need for escapism and to feel numb from the discomfort of sheer existence. It may have once served to protect from being overwhelmed by reality, and one can either accept one’s truth’s or continue to hide through whichever poison you choose, but that’s not growth, and it’s not healthy. Certainly I’ve made the decisions that have caused the need to want to escape the results, and in case you haven’t noticed, the overall state of the world we have to live in is now more than ever in crisis. To quote F. Scott Fitzgerald; “One should be able to see that things are hopeless yet be determined to make them otherwise”.

Is there something you miss that no one else knows about?
I hope someone else has noticed it but, the constant explosion and evolution of musical genre. There was a style and sound of the 1950’s through about the year 2000, then it just sort of stops!? I’m not sure what you can point to that is considered a creative or cultural leap. We may have already missed the next movements in art because the algorithm would rather you pay attention and money on whatever it’s selling.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
That what is good is measured by how much money it made. There have been a lot of brilliant musicians, artists, and producers who never got the compensation they deserve. That shouldn’t stop you from being productive.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. How do you know when you’re out of your depth?
David Bowie said; “Go a little bit out of your depth. And when you don’t feel that your feet are quite touching the bottom, you’re just about in the right place to do something exciting”. I feel that.. just when uncertainty and doubt are swimming around, strike to the heart of the idea!
