Today we’d like to introduce you to Zachery Wood.
Hi Zachery, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Officially founded in 1929, Flint Community Players (FCP) is Genesee County’s oldest community theatre. Currently on our 97th season, years of community involvement and support have helped FCP to remain a staple of the arts in Genesee County. We produce 5 – 7 shows per season, including a little bit of everything from musicals, to dramas, to comedies, to family shows, and everything in between
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
While we have been around for 97 years, FCP has faced similar struggles any arts program has faced. Cuts to the arts, attempting to fill audiences for varying interests, COVID cutting our volunteer base, and the standard ups and downs of productions are all part of the art. But these struggles have helped FCP to grow closer, learn and adapt, and every year we strive to be a little stronger than the previous. And this is all thanks to the wonderful support system of volunteers and patrons we have.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
At Flint Community Players, we strive to bring a variety of stories and opportunities to the Greater Flint and Genesee County Area. By offering things such as a variety of shows, showcases, scholarship opportunities, backstage and onstage opportunities, and much more we are able to help art and theatre thrive in our corner of Flint.
One of the things we are most proud of is the sense of connection and community our productions create. From helping directors and designers realize their creative visions, to making actors feel like stars on stage, we are honored to see the many ways our shows impact volunteers, audiences, and the wider community. Being part of those experiences is incredibly meaningful to our organization. We are also very proud of our well-loved Sensory Friendly Performances, where at minimum two productions a year we offer adjusted performances to meet any accommodations or needs patrons have, and strive to show that theatre should be accessible to anyone.
What helps set us apart is the incredible network of resources and people that has grown around us. With more than 97 years of theatre in the Genesee County area, Flint Community Players has built a strong community of volunteers, artists, and supporters. That network allows us not only to create our own productions, but also to support other arts organizations throughout the year by sharing costumes, set pieces, and knowledge. We are grateful for these resources and proud to be able to share them with our arts neighbors.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
As silly as it may sound, video apps such as Tik Tok and YouTube have been tremendous resources for knowledge and growth. We are able to subscribe and watch other theatres and theatre professionals, ask questions and have conversations, and utilize the power of the internet to learn and grow wherever possible.
