Life & Work with Yohanna Peters of Kalamazoo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yohanna Peters.

Hi Yohanna, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always had a thing about perfectly groomed eyebrows, I just wasn’t good at doing them! I can remember practicing in the mirror, watching YouTube videos and hoping to one day be just as good, but the truth was, it was hard! It wasn’t as easy as it looked and it would stress me out! I can recall reaching out to a make up artist for advice and simply put, she said just keep practicing. so I did… over the years I would use the women around me to demonstrate my best efforts. I would bring my brow products to work and do my coworkers brows on break, and that became my practice! Fast forward, many years later while scrolling on instagram, I seen sierra from love and hip hop showcasing Microblading on her page and I fell in love. I was both eager and afraid to learn the skill so I eventually talked myself out of it. But fate would have it, 4 years later in the height of the pandemic, I seen a permanent make up artist on Facebook offering a course and I thought to myself this is it, This is your chance! But shortly after my daughter and I caught COVID. And this was at a time where we barely knew how to treat it so I was shook! Naturally My priorities shifted but I kept encouraging myself to stay the course. We survived Covid, I took the class and the rest is history!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I have made many mistakes along the way. Struggling to maintain symmetry, applying tint, brow mapping, tattooing you name it. The only thing I haven’t done is quit! I look back on my work and some photos make me cringe while others serve as a reflection of what I have improved in and what things I can do better next go round if given the opportunity. overall I can visually see my growth and that’s been good enough for me. I know that I am by far my biggest critic so if I make myself proud I know I’m on the right track!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
