Today we’d like to introduce you to Xia-Tian Huyck.
Hi Xia-Tian, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
The University of Michigan Weightlifting team is a Club Sport sponsored by the University of Michigan. We are a USAW-affiliated, competitive, and selective team that strives to educate athletes of all experience levels and train them in the Olympic lifts, the snatch, and clean and jerk. Our hope is to raise athletes as citizens of the weightlifting community and produce national-level weightlifters within their time on the team. We hope to send a minimum of 10 athletes to University Nationals each year and grow our presence in the collegiate weightlifting community.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
We spent 2 years as a club before applying as a Club Sport within the university. The leadership team is primarily student-run, and our elected board has conducted all negotiations between our training facilities, club sports advisor, the university itself, and prospective members.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you, or support you?
We are always looking for new athletes to add to our roster, and we hold tryouts at the beginning of each fall semester. We are open to athletes of all levels who are coachable and athletic, whether or not they have experience with the Olympic lifts. For the friends and family of the team, we do have our Instagram page as our main source of information, videos and pictures of the teammates, and ways to support the club. You can follow us at @umichweightlifting to see what is happening in our training hall!
