Life & Work with Volly of Ypsilanti Michigan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Volly.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started my love for music at a very young age. Which eventually led to me writing my own songs by 13, and recording my first studio record by 16-17.

I had a rough up bringing, grew up in poverty with my father in and out of jail and the streets raising me.

When i started taking music seriously in 2017 i made a promise to myself that i won’t give up, and i’ve been going crazy ever since.

My goal isn’t money, or fame.
My goal is to keep that promise i made to myself as a kid.
That one day i will do what i love for a living, and be able to provide for my family in ways i could have only imagined.
It’s my jobs to break generation curses and chains..

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Nothing about this road has been smooth or easy.
Everything from finding yourself as an artist and a man, to funding this career, and everything i between.

Growing up in poverty bring problems, like moving every year, never having a place to call home.

Then of course funding your dreams as a child is a lot more challenging.
It gets discouraging starting out fresh. Learning your sound, figuring out the internet and what works for you. There’s a lot to learn in this buisness and a lot to learn about yourself.

You may not be the best at first. For a dream like this you have to really believe in yourself and trust the progress. It only gets more ugly before it gets beautiful, and it may even take a while to learn things before you actually start to really enjoy the process. But don’t ever give up

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My day job i’m a Carpenter, building to make a better life for the community.

After hours i’m doing the same. except i’m building an empire.

I find myself to be a jack of all trades, i can be good at anything i wanna be good at.
I’m most proud of my artistry, but aside from that, i’m most proud of my faith in my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

I was a rebellious kid a being at this place in my life now as a grown man, is a lot to look back at and be proud of.

What sets me apart i believe is that i don’t wanna be anything like anybody out there. Im me whole heartedly.
i do what i want, say what I want, and move how God intends me.
I’m confident it will all pay off in the end, im just putting in the work harder than ever before, and waiting for my time

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Networking in general. my advice is go where you normally wouldn’t. Put yourself out there. Every show performance opportunity, every network session, hell even studio sessions with local like minded artists.

Never be too friendly, at the end of the day a lot of people only see music as a buisness. Be you unapologeticly and the right relationships will come around
