Life & Work with Trudi Clark of Down town

Today we’d like to introduce you to Trudi Clark.

Hi Trudi, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
When I was 18 I moved to Denver Colorado with just the clothes on my back and landed a job in a group home 2 weeks later. That’s when my love of people of all need and walk of life began! 4 years later I moved back to Michigan just in time for the big mental institutions to close. I was fortunate enough to land a job with Lutheran Social Services and we started a pilot program to accommodate some of the individuals being released. We housed them in duplexes two men on one side two women on the other with one-on-one staffing provided. We’ve worked very closely with the man who developed the program gentle teaching was a renowned psychologist and I’m proud to say that 5 years later the program was a success! Not because we gained notoriety or big awards the best Wayfair me to measure the success of the program was the fact that the individuals that we were serving were thriving in a community setting surrounded by their peers and experiencing quality of life. I’ve worked probably absolutely every position and with every type of population in the business for the last 40 years. The last 12 years of my journey has been with the elderly and it has been such an honor to be trusted to be a part of the last chapter of so many people’s lives.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There were struggles , mostly me getting in my own way , fearing I’m not enough. But I had to come to terms with the fact that you never stop being a student of life. When you come across like minded individuals that were carrying out your mission before you even knew your place in it, retirement becomes less desirable. Infact you stay hungry for the next little win .

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
At Papa’s place, we specialize in dementia with dignity. Not taking our clients on a journey but joining them on there’s . Every day is a new miracle , and a new way to make a positive impact. Learning how to see the world thru the eyes of someone with dementia, is everything and life changing for both me and the people is serve.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I embrace risk! Without risk we can’t experience failure and failure is the best teacher. I have taken risks that could have cost me my career but at the end of the day the life saving /changing impact it caused would make me say , I’d do it again.
