Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelby Beaty. 

Hi Shelby, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Hello, my name is Shelby, I’m the CEO and photographer for Images by Shelby. I started photography as a hobby back in my early years of high school and knew that it was my career path when I picked up a camera. I started my business in the summer of 2020 during the pandemic, which wasn’t an easy task. Furthermore, I started college as well as running a business. It was a lot of work. I started out with friends of mine that I knew were graduating from high school after me and offered to do their senior pictures. Truth is, I love portraits, I love how every person is different and has their own personality and their story comes to life in photos and I wanted to be the one to capture that moment. I knew about the photography part but the business part I had no clue what I was doing. While working on my photography degree, I chose to work on a business certificate at the same time and received that in August 2021 which helped me get more insight of How to make the customer experience the best I can. As of right now, I will be graduating from Washtenaw Community College with an associate’s in photographic technology in May of 22’. For Images by Shelby, I’m working to improve my website and putting a name for myself to be this portrait photographer I want to be. 

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Going through a pandemic never helps with anything, but since I’ve been so focused on school it’s been hard to advertise myself and get the clientele I’m looking for, and reaching out to the right people. Hopefully, now that school is almost over for me, I’d be happy enough to say I have more time to focus on those things. 

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Images by Shelby’s main focus is on senior portraits whether you are graduating from high school or college, we have you covered. I focus on portraits as well with couples, families, and sports. I’d like to expand my horizon with weddings, newborns, and maternity photoshoots as well. Not only that, but I’m proud of how far my photography has come, starting as a 14-year-old and progressing my skills to be the best I can in any situation. 

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
In the next 5 to 10 years, I would love to travel and produce street portraits. I’d like to open up my own studio one day and produce my images out of there, to have families and seniors come into my place and have their images taken there.
