Today we’d like to introduce you to Shawna Stewart.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
The Starter Kit is a box of essentials for nursing students in the classroom and clinical setting, at an affordable price.
It was given its name due to it being everything a nursing student needs to set out on their journey to becoming a licensed nurse. I had a plan for this business for some time. In May 2020, I registered The Starter Kit as an LLC and began fundraising to get the business up and running. I started a website and social media pages for The Starter Kit.
In 2021, I had the Starter Kit listed on Amazon for purchase.
The Starter Kit is a supply kit for nursing students. It contains quality items that someone could take from a student nurse to a licensed nurse. While in college, I noticed that on top of tuition and books, the items for nursing clinicals were very costly. Soon after graduating, I knew I wanted to do something that could offset the financial burden for nursing students like myself, who could not always afford the items needed for school.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting this business has presented several challenges.
Initially, I needed funding to get the items that are included in The Starter Kit. I started a business fundraiser which assisted in providing inventory. Once I had inventory, another obstacle, was exposure. I depend heavily on word of mouth. I do, however, pay for advertising on social networks and google.

My name is Shawna Stewart. I am a 30 y.o. Detroit native. A registered nurse for the past 7 years, with the last 5 years being in the emergency department at a level 1 trauma center. I am a homeowner within the city of Detroit. I love my city and I love my career. Nursing is my calling.
I have always had the desire to do something in the medical field since I was a small child. After graduating from Cass Technical high school in 2010, I narrowed that down to nursing. I went on to The University of Detroit Mercy, where I graduated cum laude. I have a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). I have certifications in advanced cardiac life support, basic life support, trauma nurse core curriculum, and advanced burn life support.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memory was taking yearly road trips to Alabama as a family to see where my grandparents grew up.
